Mytopicforthisinquiryprojectisawordthatmostpeople,butmostlyparentsare

frightenedby.Thewordiskidnapped.Ihavealwayslovedreadingbooksaboutmysteriesand
peoplesolvingcrimesoftheghostinthebasementorthemissingbookthatwasfound.
However,myfavoritebooksareaboutcrimeinvestigatorssearchingforakidnappedkidoradult.
Ilikereadinghowtheygothroughtheprocessofdecipheringcluestocatchtheperpetrator.Ive
alwayswonderedwhypeople,inthefirstplace,gooutoftheirwayandkidnapsomeone.The
effectsofpeoplebeingkidnappedisbeyondcompare.Theemotionalandphysicalturmoilthese
individualsgothrougheffectsthemtremendously.Icouldn'timagewhatitwasliketogo
throughthat.Thisbookhasreallyhelpedmetounderstandwhatcouldhappenwhenyouget
kidnappedandthephysicalandemotionaleffectsithasontheperson.

wokeupshewaswaitingforhermothertocomeintoherroomandgiveherakissbeforework,
hermomreluctantlyforgotsoJayceegotoutofbedandgotreadyforschoollikesheusually
does.Shegotdressed,atebreakfast,packedalunch,saidbyetohercat,andwalkedoutthedoor.
AsJayceeiswalkingupahilltogotoherbusstop,acarpullsupbehindher.Inthebookshe
describesthatHelean[ed]slightlyoutofthewindowsofastIbarleyregisterthathehas
somethingblackinhishand.IhearacracklingsoundsandIfeelparalyzed(9).Shewas
paralyzedbyastunguninthemiddleofthestreet,whereeveryonecouldsee.Ifsomeonewould
haveseenit,wouldshestillwouldhavebeenkidnapped?Jayceewaspulledintothevan,and
thatwasthelastdayineighteenyearsherparentshaveseenher.

Ifyouthinkhowshegottakenwasbad,justwaittillyoulearnaboutwhathappentothis

elevenyearoldgirlovertheyears.Hedoesnotlooklikeabadguy.Helookslikeanormalguy.
Likeanyordinaryguyyouwouldseeineverydaylife.Butheisnot!(14).Phillip,her
kidnapper,thentakesherintothebackyardofhishouseandputsherintoalittleshackthatshe
willbelivingthere.Heonlygivesherfoodanddrinkonceaday,sherecallsthatHebecamemy
entireworld.Idependedonhimforfood,water,mytoilet.Hewasmyonlysourceof
amusement.IcravedhumancontactsomuchbythenthatIactuallylookedforwardtohim
comingtoseemeitfeltlikehewasbestowingagifttomehispresence.(26).Shefeltlike
thatuntiltheday,theguycameinarapedher.Jayceewasrapedmanytimesbythisguyand
madeherdothingsthatisunimaginableforelevenyearoldgirlstodo.Easter1994,wastheday

sherealizedshewaspregnant.Mybabygirlcameintotheworldat4:35a.m.,August18,1994.
Iamfourteenyearsoldandvery,veryscared(109),Jayceerecallsofthedayherfirstbabywas
born.Shethengetspregnantfromthesameguyandhasasecondchild.Shenowhastwo
childrenattheageofseventeenyearsoldnamedAandS.

ThedaythatJayceewasfree,wasthedaythatwasthehardestforher.Phillipstook

Jayceeandhertwochildrentothepolicestationtotalktohisparoleofficertostoptheir
harassment.ShesaysthatshewassoattachedtoPhillipthatshewasgoingtolieforhim,tobe
abletostaywithhimIwassoscared,andeventhoughIwassoclosetohavingmylifeback,I
stillcouldnotcrashthroughthewallthathebuiltinsideofme(207).Jayceefinallygotallof
thecourageandrealisminsideofherandtoldtheofficerherrealnameanddateofbirth.Phillip
wasthensenttojailandshewasfinallyfreeaftereighteenyears.Jayceegottofinallyseeher
momandsister,sherecognizedthemrightaway.Nowthatsheisfree,shecanbeamothertoher
children,freetodrive,andfreetosaythatthisisherfamily.Shehasagreatpsychologistthat
helpsherwithalloftheemotionalchallengessheisfacingandsheismeetingupwithold
friends.Jayceestillhaschallengeskeepingherdaughterssafefromemotionalandphysicalabuse
fromtheoutsideworld,howevertheyaregettingthroughit.Shestartedherownfoundation
calledtheJAYCFoundationthathelpstornapartfamiliesandvictimsofabductionsand
exploitations.Ihopetoencourageotherstoreachoutandhelpotherfamiliesandanimals,too.

Thisbookwasveryhardtoreademotionallybutitwasagreatreadformyinquiry

question.Ithelpedmetorealizehowtragickidnappingscanbeandthephysicalandemotional
changesithasonindividuals,especiallyyoungchildrenlikeJaycee.Ihopenobodyhastogo

throughtheexperiencethatthatelevenyearoldhadtogothrough.Shehadtohaveatremendous
amountfaithandpushthrough.Thisbookhasreallyopenedmyeyesmoretotherealizationof
kidnapping.
