Whyispoetryimportanttoenforceineducation?

Whatistheproblemthatneedstobeaddressedintheindustry/community?
Theproblemisthattheeducationsystemdoesnotreallytakepoetryintoaccount.Whilethere
arecountlessimportanteducationrequirements,poetryisbarelytouchedupontheCommonCore
Standards.Thisisaproblembecausepoetryisessentialinaclassroomandschoolsaremissing
outonallofthebenefitsofpoetry.

Whospecifically,andpreferablylocallyisbeingaffectedbythisproblem?
Schoolsandtheirteachersandstudents.Theyareallmissingoutonthepositivewaysthatpoetry
canimpacttheirlives.Poetrycanhelpimprovecriticalthinkingskillsinstudents,cangive
studentsaformofartisticexpressioninaneducationalmanner,anditisaformofunderstanding
andsafetybetweenthestudentandteacher.

Whatissomethingyouwouldliketodotohelpsolvethisissue?
Oneofmymaincomponentsofmypotentialprojectistowriteaneditorialthatisverysimilarto
myseniorpaperandtrytopublishitduringNationalPoetryMonth.
AlsoduringthemonthofApril,henceNationalPoetryMonth,Iwouldreallyliketocelebratethe
specialmonthinmyschool.Iwoulddothisbytryingtoholdafewduringschoolpoetryslams,
postpoetryrandomlyaroundtheschool,celebratefunpoetrydays(TBD),andmakesure
everyoneintheschoolknowsthatpoetryissomethingimportanttome.Lastly,Iamplanningon
creatingapoetrycurriculumthatcouldpossiblybetaughtduringBlackstoneELAclasses.The
curriculumisstilltobedeterminedbutIplantocreatelessonsmostlyfocusingoncreative
poetryandmakingsurethestudentsunderstandthepurposeofpoetry.

Howwillthispositivelyimpactthecommunity?(Whatdoyouhopetoaccomplish?)
Ifeellikethiswouldbeimpactfultothecommunitybecausetheeditorialisaimingtoreacha
largeaudience.ThatwasthebestwaythatIcouldthinkoftoreachanaudiencelargethan
Blackstoneinapresentablemanner.Iwouldreallyhopethatthepapergetsenoughattentionfor
theCommonCoretoreconsidertheirstandards,butthatsareallybigdream.

Whatorganizationscouldyouworkwith?
IhavenotlookedintothisasmuchasIshouldhave.ButearlierintheyearwhenIsetup
interviewswithoutsidepeopleIthoughtthatanorganizationcalledFrequencyWriterscould
helpme,butIdneedtocontactthemagain.Ialsogottointerviewapoetandteacher,Tina
Cane,andshewasgreat.Icantrycontactingheragainandseewhatcouldcomeofit.

Doyouknowanyonewhocouldhelpyougaincontactwiththatgroup?
Mycoach,Tascheisagreatpersontohelpmegaincontactwithanyone.Shehasalotof
connectionswiththeenglishdepartment.Infact,shestheonewhointroducedmetoTinaCane.

RhondaandCarolynarealsohelpfulbecausetheybothhavealotofconnectionsaswellandcan
probablyhelpmeinthisarea.

Besuretoincludewhatyouhopeto
accomplishandwhy,howyouwilldoit,andhowyouwillmeasureyourimpact.
Myprojectisabundleofsmallprojects.IplantoplaneverythingoutbeforeIam
intendingtolauncheverything,whichwouldbeduringNationalPoetryMonthinApril.Ihave
mentionedbeforethatIamwillingtowriteaneditorialaboutwhypoetryshouldbeincorporated
ineducation.Tasche,mycoach,isalsowillingtohelpmethroughtheprocess.Anotherideathat
mycoachandIhadwasthatIcreateasmallcurriculuminwhichIplantoteachafewlessonsin
theupcomingCollegeWritingcourseatBlackstoneAcademy.Fromthere,Iwouldmakesmaller
andlessintensivelessonstopossiblyhopinandteachtheotherEnglishclassesatBlackstone.
Othersmall/bigideasthatIhavearehostinganightjustforpoetryslams,notincluding
exhibitionnight.Also,itwouldbereallycoolifIwouldgetachancetomeetthecommissioner
that'scomingtovisitusinFebruary.Taschehadmentionedhowhisviewsaresimilartominein
termsofcreatingaclassroomthatenforces socialemotionallearning.Itwouldbeevencooler
ifsomehowhehelpedmemakemyprojectmoredirectedtowardsthecommunity.
Atthispoint,Ifeelliketheseideasarejusthopesanddreamsandseemoutofmy
bounds.But,Ineverknow,itcouldturnintoahugesuccessintheend.SomethingImreally
hopingfor.ThebestpartisthatIfeelreallyexcitedandmotivatedtobeabletoaccomplishallof
theseideas.Withthatitwouldbeanevenbiggerandbetteraccomplishmentifmehavingdone
allofthesetasksreallymadeadifferenceinbothhowpeoplefeelaboutpoetryandwhetherthe
ELAstandardsarechanged.Thatwouldbesuperb.
HowcanIgetallofthisdoneintimeformetograduate?Thatsagoodquestion.Butin
myopinion,IfeellikethatissomethingthatIshouldnthavetoknowrightatthismoment.I
thinkitisbesttosaythatitwillbeansweredasIleadmyselfuptogettingitdone.Inthe
meantime,Imgoingtorelyonmyenthusiasmforthisprojectandthehelpofmysuperiors.As
longasIstillfeelthesamewayIfeelnowaboutthisprojectbytheendofthisprocess,Iwill
knowthatIhavemadeanimpact.

beabletowalkacrossthestagewithasigneddiploma.
CommunityEngagement:MyprojectisallFORthecommunity.Iwantmylocal
communityandanycommunitythathasmylocalcommunityinittobenefitfrommy
ideas.
