Low Profile Broadband Circularly Polarized Patch

Antenna Using Metasurface

Potential Achievements and

Parameters
Single-feed, braodband and used meta-surface.
Truncated corner square patch is sandwiched between the

metasurface and the ground plane.

Overall size is 32 mm x 32 mm x 3 mm.
-10 dB return loss bandwidth is 4.70-7.48 GHz (45.6%) and a

3-dB AR bandwidth of 4.9-6.2 GHz (23.4%).

Gain 7.0-7.6 dBic

Simulations

Techniques/Discussion
Single feed CP radiation: by using e.g. a

diagonally fed nearly square patch, a

truncated corner square patch, or a square
patch with a diagonal slot etc.
To increase RL and AR BWs: by using e.g. thick

substrate, L-shaped strip feeding, shorting pin

loading and stacked patch structures. But
these techniques lead to the increase in the
height of the antenna, usually 0.1 or thicker.

Motivation of using
Metamaterials
It results in the reduction of antenna size and

increase in BW.

In this paper, surface waves propagating on

metasurface are excited to generate

additional resonances and minimum AR
points.

Surface wave resonance

Considering the finite-sized metasurface as a

cavity, the surface wave resonances can be

qualitatively determined by
SW = 2 / Lcav
Lcav = N P
The behavior in |S11| profiles show that the

minimum AR points at lower frequency is

produced by the driven patch and the at the
higher ones caused by the surface waves.
