WhentheNaziscametopowerinGermanyin1933,Jewswerelivingin
everycountryofEurope.AtotalofroughlyninemillionJewslivedinthe
countriesthatwouldbeoccupiedbyGermanyduringWorldWarII.Bythe
endofthewar,twooutofeverythreeoftheseJewswouldbedead,and
EuropeanJewishlifewouldbechangedforever.
In1933thelargestJewishpopulationswereconcentratedineastern
Europe,includingPoland,theSovietUnion,Hungary,andRomania.Many
oftheJewsofeasternEuropelivedinpredominantlyJewishtownsor
villages,calledshtetles.EasternEuropeanJewslivedaseparatelifeasa
minoritywithinthecultureofthemajority.Theyspoketheirownlanguage,
Yiddish,whichcombineselementsofGermanandHebrew.Theyread
Yiddishbooks,andattendedYiddishtheaterandmovies.Althoughmany
youngerJewsinlargertownswerebeginningtoadoptmodernwaysand
dress,olderpeopleoftendressedtraditionally,themenwearinghatsor
caps,andthewomenmodestlycoveringtheirhairwithwigsorkerchiefs.
Incomparison,theJewsinwesternEuropeGermany,France,Italy,the
Netherlands,andBelgiummadeupmuchlessofthepopulationand
tendedtoadoptthecultureoftheirnonJewishneighbors.Theydressed
andtalkedliketheircountrymen,andtraditionalreligiouspracticesand
Yiddishcultureplayedalessimportantpartintheirlives.Theytendedto
havehadmoreformaleducationthaneasternEuropeanJewsandtolivein
townsorcities.
Jewscouldbefoundinallwalksoflife,asfarmers,tailors,seamstresses,
factoryhands,accountants,doctors,teachers,andsmallbusinessowners.
Somefamilieswerewealthymanymorewerepoor.Manychildrenended
theirschoolingearlytoworkinacraftortradeotherslookedforwardto

continuingtheireducationattheuniversitylevel.Still,whatevertheir
differences,theywerethesameinonerespect:bythe1930s,withtherise
oftheNazistopowerinGermany,theyallbecamepotentialvictims,and
theirliveswereforeverchanged.
WiththeoutbreakofWorldWar2in1939,Hitlerhadassumedfull
dictatorshipofGermanyandhismissionwasclear.Inhispoliticalprotest/
manifesto,MeinKampf,heoutlinedhisFinalSolution.Thiswashisplan
toeradicatealloftheJewishpopulationthathehadusedasascapegoatto
blamethestateofthecountry.Overacoupleofyearsprevioustherehad
beenagrowingnumberofbansontherightsoftheJewsandhowthey
couldinteractwithGermansociety.Theywereforcedtostoptradingwith
otherGermansandonKristallnacht,Jewishshopswereransacked.Worse
followed.
