LABORER (STREET DEPARTMENT)


Incumbent serves as Laborer for the Street Department and is responsible for performing a wide variety of routine and seasonal
duties to assist in the maintenance of the streets and alleys of the City of Anderson.

DUTIES

Performs a wide variety of routine and seasonal duties to assist in the maintenance of streets and alleys
and may do work in and on other City owned property.

Checks equipment to ensure proper level of fuel, lubricants, tires, tire pressure, and for unusual wear of
equipment.

Assists in patching and sealing streets and concrete work.


May be assigned to weed crew using weed whip, push mower, and rider mower to trim around hedges
and signs.

Assists in cutting down and removing dead trees.

Assists snowplow operator by operating salt spreader.

Cleans garage area and washes trucks and equipment.

Uses simple hand tools to prepare job site.

May act as flagger along City streets warning motorists of road construction in progress.

Performs related duties as assigned.

I. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

High school diploma or GED or related experience.

Working knowledge of and ability to apply general street maintenance practices.

Ability to use simple hand tools relating to basic job assignments.

Knowledge of and ability to perform job using safety rules and regulations required on assigned work
project.

Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with proper endorsements and
demonstrated safe driving record.

II. RESPONSIBILITY
Receives detailed instructions both before and during work and is supervised on a continuous basis. Incumbent follows
standardized practices while performing duties.
Incumbent reports directly to the Foreman.

III. PHYSICAL EFFORT

Incumbent is continually standing, bending, pushing, and pulling using a shovel and various other hand tools. Incumbent may
operate a truck and may do considerable shoveling of asphalt, dirt, gravel, and other materials.

IV. WORKING CONDITIONS


Incumbent is exposed to the dangers of moving traffic and may be exposed to inclement weather conditions, such as
snowstorms and excessive heat.
