MORTIFICATION

OF SIN

CHAPTER 4

LIFE AND
COMFORT IN
MORTIFICATION

[1]
Mortification is not
the foundation of
Christian life (i.e.
liveliness, vigor,
comfort).

Why is this important to grasp

as we approach mortification?

A man may be carried on in a

constant course of mortification all
his days; and yet perhaps never
enjoy a good day of peace and
consolation.

[2]
Mortification does
not impart life.

What does provide the

foundation of the Christians
comfort and peace if not
mortification?

What is the relationship

between justification,
adoption, and mortification?

[3]
The influence of
mortification in the
Christian life.

In what ways does allowing sin

to go unmortified affect your
Christian life?

1. It weakens the soul

(deprives it of its strength).
2. Darkens the soul.

It is a cloud, a thick cloud, that

spreads itself over the face of the
soul, and intercepts all the beams
of Gods love and favor.

In what way does continued

sin affect your use of the
means of grace (Bible study,
prayer, etc.)?

On a positive note, how does

the practice of mortification
allow for great vigor in the
Christian life?

1. Prunes all the graces of

God, making room for
them in our heart to grow.
2. Assurance of salvation.
