URGENT STEPS FOR UFG REMEDIATION

1.

Segmentation of network divide the gas distribution network into small and manageable
segments, where the gas entering the segment is metered and gas sales are reconciled on
monthly basis.

2.

If the unaccounted-for gas (UFG) is high in a segment, the differential diagnosis should
be carried out on war-footing basis and the remedial steps should be taken accordingly.
This requires setting up new town border stations (TBS) and addition of pressure
regulating stations (PRS).

3.

The remedial steps comprise the following:

a. Check all gas meters and conduct overhead leakage survey. Replace slow meters
and repair overhead leaks.
b. Check the cathodic protection (CP) voltage levels and carry out underground leak
surveys.
i. A low CP voltage may indicate susceptibility to extreme corrosion and
leakage. Upgrade CP system and repair coating damages immediately.
ii. The pipeline needs to be inspected for fitness-for-service and accordingly
a decision on minor repairs (leak clamps/segment replacement) or
rehabilitation should be implemented.
c. If there is no significant reduction in UFG of the segment after overhead leak
rectification, meter replacement and underground leak rectification/rehabilitation,
then probe the segment for gas theft

4.

During the time a high-UFG network segment is identified and remedied, the following
steps shall also be taken:
a. The network shall be operated at optimal pressures in such a way that it continues
to supply gas to all customers. (Automatic Pressure profiling systems will help)
b.

Magnesium anodes shall be installed at tail-ends of the segment and intermediate

points to improve protection levels.

c. Concentration levels of odorants shall be increased, if possible.

5.

To look at the big picture of the UFG in a distribution network, GIS must display the CP
voltage levels, number of leak complaints, minimum and maximum gas pressures and
UFG levels of all marked network segments.

6.

For long-term reduction of UFG:

a. Distribution system simulation software

EUCALYPT, etc. shall be used for:

like:

SYNERGEE,

SIMONE,

i. Carrying out flow balancing and pressure balancing exercises across the
entire network.
ii. Designing rehabilitation, reinforcement and extension of gas distribution
system.
b. Concept of dedicated utility-corridors for gas distribution systems and land

acquisitions for CP stations shall be enforced by the Government of Pakistan.
