Odour : Carbolic

Action on litmus solution: Blue litmus to red.

Ferric chloride test


Shake the compound with 5ml
of water and add one drop of
aqueous solution of ferric
chloride.
Libermanns Test:
To 1ml of organic compound
add 1-2 crystals of sodium
nitrite . Heat for 30sec and
cool. Add conc sulphuric acid
followed by water and shake.
To the above solution add
excess of NaOH

Appearance of
violet colour.

Phenolic group
may be present.

Appearance of red
coloration.

Phenolic group
may be present.

Appearance of blue
green color

Phenolic group is
present.
