(a)Introduction.
(1)Thefineartsincorporatethestudyofdance,music,theatre,andthevisualartstooffer
uniqueexperiencesandempowerstudentstoexplorerealities,relationships,andideas.These
disciplinesengageandmotivateallstudentsthroughactivelearning,criticalthinking,and
innovativeproblemsolving.Thefineartsdevelopcognitivefunctioningandincreasestudent
academicachievement,higherorderthinking,communication,andcollaborationskills,making
thefineartsapplicabletocollegereadiness,careeropportunities,workplaceenvironments,social
skills,andeverydaylife.Studentsdevelopaestheticandculturalawarenessthroughexploration,
leadingtocreativeexpression.Creativity,encouragedthroughthestudyofthefinearts,is
essentialtonurtureanddevelopthewholechild.
(2)Fourbasicstrandsfoundations:musicliteracycreativeexpressionhistoricalandcultural
relevanceandcriticalevaluationandresponseprovidebroad,unifyingstructuresfororganizing
theknowledgeandskillsstudentsareexpectedtoacquire.Thefoundationofmusicliteracyis
fosteredthroughreading,writing,reproducing,andcreatingmusic,thusdevelopingastudent's
intellect.Throughcreativeexpression,studentsapplytheirmusicliteracyandthe
criticalthinkingskillsofmusictosing,play,read,write,and/ormove.Byexperiencingmusical
periodsandstyles,studentswillunderstandtherelevanceofmusictohistory,culture,andthe
world,includingtherelationshipofmusictootheracademicdisciplinesandthevocational
possibilitiesoffered.Throughcriticallistening,studentsanalyze,evaluate,andrespondtomusic,
developingcriteriaformakingcriticaljudgmentsandinformedchoices.
(3)Statementsthatcontaintheword"including"referencecontentthatmustbemastered,while
thosecontainingthephrase"suchas"areintendedaspossibleillustrativeexamples.

(b)Knowledgeandskills.
(1)Foundations:musicliteracy.Thestudentdescribesandanalyzesmusicalsound.Thestudent
isexpectedto:
(A)distinguishamongavarietyofmusicaltimbres,includingthoseofchildren'svoicesand
soprano,alto,tenor,andbassadultvoices
(B)distinguishamongavarietyofmusicaltimbres,includingthoseofwoodwind,brass,string,
percussion,keyboard,electronicinstruments,andinstrumentsofvariouscultures
(C)useknownmusicsymbolsandterminologyreferringtorhythmmelodytimbreform
tempo,includingaccelerandoandritardandodynamicsarticulationandmeter,includingsimple
andcompound,toexplainmusicalsoundspresentedaurallyand
(D)identifyandlabelsmallandlargemusicalformssuchasabac,AB,andABArondoand
themeandvariationspresentedaurallyinsimplesongsandlargerworks.
(2)Foundations:musicliteracy.Thestudentreads,writes,andreproducesmusicnotationusing
asystem.Technologyandothertoolsmaybeusedtoread,write,andreproducemusical
examples.Thestudentisexpectedto:

(A)read,write,andreproducerhythmicpatternsusingstandardnotation,includingsyncopated
patterns,andpreviouslylearnednotevaluesin2/4,3/4,or4/4metersasappropriate
(B)read,write,andreproduceextendedpentatonicanddiatonicmelodicpatternsusingstandard
staffnotationand
(C)identifyandinterpretnewandpreviouslylearnedmusicsymbolsandtermsreferringto
tempo,includingaccelerandoandritardandodynamicsarticulationandmeter,includingsimple
andcompound.
(3)Creativeexpression.Thestudentperformsavariedrepertoireofdevelopmentally
appropriatemusicininformalorformalsettings.Thestudentisexpectedto:
(A)singandplayclassroominstrumentsindependentlyoringroupswithaccurateintonation
andrhythm
(B)singorplayavariedrepertoireofmusicsuchasAmericanfolksongs,patrioticmusic,and
folksongsrepresentativeoflocalandworldculturesindependentlyoringroups
(C)movealoneandwithotherstoavariedrepertoireofmusicusinggrossmotor,finemotor,
locomotor,andnonlocomotorskillsandintegratedmovementsuchashandsandfeetmoving
together
(D)performvariousfolkdancesandplayparties
(E)performsimpletwopartmusic,includingrhythmicandmelodicostinati,rounds,partner
songs,andcountermelodiesand
(F)interpretthroughperformancenewandpreviouslylearnedmusicsymbolsandterms
referringtotempo,includingaccelarandoandritardandodynamicsarticulationandmeter,
includingsimpleandcompound.
(4)Creativeexpression.Thestudentcreatesandexploresnewmusicalideaswithinspecified
guidelines.Thestudentisexpectedto:
(A)createrhythmicphrasesthroughimprovisationandcomposition
(B)createmelodicphrasesthroughimprovisationandcompositionand
(C)createsimpleaccompanimentsthroughimprovisationandcomposition.
(5)Historicalandculturalrelevance.Thestudentexaminesmusicinrelationtohistoryand
cultures.Thestudentisexpectedto:
(A)performavariedrepertoireofsongs,movement,andmusicalgamesrepresentativeof
diverseculturessuchashistoricalfolksongsofTexasandAmericaandEuropeanandAfrican
culturesinAmerica
(B)performmusicrepresentativeofTexasandAmerica,including"TheStarSpangledBanner"
(C)identifyanddescribemusicfromdiversegenres,styles,periods,andculturesand
(D)examinetherelationshipsbetweenmusicandinterdisciplinaryconcepts.
(6)Criticalevaluationandresponse.Thestudentlistensto,respondsto,andevaluatesmusicand
musicalperformances.Thestudentisexpectedto:
(A)exhibitaudienceetiquetteduringliveandrecordedperformances

(B)identifyknownrhythmicandmelodicelementsinauralexamplesusingappropriate
vocabulary
(C)describespecificmusicaleventssuchaschangesintimbre,form,tempo,dynamics,or
articulationinauralexamplesusingappropriatevocabulary
(D)respondverballyandthroughmovementtoshortmusicalexamples
(E)evaluateavarietyofcompositionsandformalorinformalmusicalperformancesusing
specificcriteriaand
(F)justifypersonalpreferencesforspecificmusicworksandstylesusingmusicvocabulary.
