Chapter 4

CONCLUSIONS
Based on the results obtained in these experiments, the following can be concluded for the
drilling process of aluminum alloys with high speed steel drills:
1. Analysis of thrust force and torque force gave similar graph ratio based on the experimental
values.
2. Also it is found that thrust force and torque force decreases with increase in speed and gives
the best performance at the highest speed under flood condition.
3. The holes obtained with the MQL system showed either similar or better quality than those
obtained with flood of abundant soluble oil.
4. Moreover, the values of flank wear were similar for the two cooling/lubrication systems used,
which proves the feasibility of using the MQL technique.
5. The HSS drill with MQL has more advantages when compared to other two conditions.
6. The quality of the drilled holes could be significantly improved by applying MQL. Also by
applying MQL, the remaining chips inside the holes and burrs around the holes were mostly
eliminated. This could be due to the enhanced lubrication and reduced chip adhesion in the case
of MQL, and therefore it could be an effective solution for easy chip removal and deburring for
the micro-drilling process.
7. The surface roughness of the drilled hole is minimum with using MQL and decreases with the
speed.
8. Tool wear should minimum and tool life increases under MQL lubrication system.
