Polio Outbreak Description

Polio is a very dangerous disease that can be


very deadly. If you are experiencing these
symptoms you should contact your doctor Fever,
Sore throat, Headache, Vomiting, Fatigue, Back
pain, Neck pain, Pain or stiffness in the arms or
legs, Muscle weakness or tenderness, Meningitis.
The causes of polio start from direct exposure to an
infected person, by eating foods contaminated with
waste products from the intestines or drops of
saliva from the infected person.

Although there were no treatments when Polio


came along in the 20th century, the methods of
treatment were more therapeutic, weaving and
knitting were a part of polio care as a part of
occupational therapy. Even though its now the 21st
century there are still no treatments for polio. But

there have been many advances in helping people


get through it like braces, crutches, wheelchairs
and orthopedic shoes. To try and prevent it today
there are vaccines that you can get that that have
been proven to prevent Polio. Polio is a short for
poliomyelitis which is a disease caused by a virus.
A person is the only natural host for the polio virus.
The virus enters the mouth and multiplies in
lymphoid tissues in the throat. During Polio there is
an inflammation of the central nervous system.
Symptoms usually appear without prior illness
usually 7-14 days after exposure. Polio is caused by
one of three types of polio virus which are
members of the Enterovirus genus. Polio is a very
dangerous disease if any of this information sounds
