Syttende
Mai!

The Montana Bar,

as always, had the
Norwegian flag
a-flying on May
17th. After all, it
was Norwegian
Constitution Day
the National Day of
Norway and is
an official national
holiday observed on
May 17 each year.
Among Norwegians,
the day is referred
to simply as
syttende mai (lit.
seventeenth May),
Nasjonaldagen
(The National Day)
or Grunnlovsdagen
(The Constitution
Day). Celebrating
the moment were
Lance Monson,
Mike Molvig and
Paul Monson while
there were several
more Norwegians
inside the Montana
having a Tuesday
afternoon toast to
syttende mai.

Jean Hill Hansen, age

87, passed away peacefully on
May 16, 2016 at Prairie Ridge
Village in Glasgow, Montana
surrounded by her loving
family.

Jean was the fourth child of
Finnish immigrant parents from
Hamilton, Montana, and was
born on May 10, 1929 to Herman and Mary (Noponen) Hill in
their home 3.5 miles west of Hamilton. Jean attended school in
Hamilton, graduating in 1947 as valedictorian of her class. She
received a scholarship to Cottey College in Nevada, MO and
graduated in 1949 with an Associate of Arts degree in English.

In 1949 she went to work for the Montana Department
of Public Welfare as a caseworker and was assigned to Valley
County. Jean went on a date with Bob Hansen on New
Years Eve 1949 and they were married October 27, 1950 in
Hamilton at the German Lutheran Church. Five children
were born to this union; William Robert, Mary Lillian, Laurie
Jo, Kathryn Kay and Stephen Carl.
Jean was able to be a stay-at-home mom and busied
herself with her childrens activities and community service.
Among these were Parent Teachers Association, Cub
Scout Leader, Lutheran Sunday school teacher, Lutheran
Church Circle, Scotty Band Parents Supporter, 4-H Leader,
Homemakers Club, P.E.O., Republican Women, Republican
Central Committee and Bridge Clubs. Jean was very proud
of being a 65-year member of P.E.O. Chapter U of Glasgow.
Jean was very proud of her Finnish heritage and
exemplified sisu in every aspect of her life and instilled this
characteristic in each of her children. A highlight of her life
was a trip to Finland in 1987 to trace her genealogy and visit
the villages where her parents were born.
Jean thoroughly enjoyed her seven grandchildren and
attended many of their school and sports activities.

Jean is preceded in her death by her husband, Robert, in July
2001 and daughter in law, Margery (William), in October 1994.
Jean is survived by her children, William Hansen
(Karyn) of Phillipsburg, Mary L Hansen of Billings, Laurie
J Hansen of Maplewood, MN, Kay Hansen Bitney (Bye)
of Kalispell and Steve Hansen (Peggy) of Glasgow and her
grandchildren Stephanie Dworak (Steve) of St. Louis Park,
MN, Marina and Madison Hansen of Bozeman, MT, Andrea
and Salomon Hansen of Glasgow, Katy and Carl Bitney of
Kalispell and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of Jeans life at First Lutheran
Church in Glasgow on Thursday, May 19 at 10 a.m. Memorials
may be made to Cottey College, P.E.O. Foundation, First
Lutheran Church of Glasgow or the charity of your choice.

Jeans family is hoping there is bridge club in heaven!

Anglers of the Year) were in a bit of a pickle. Should

they head back for weigh-ins and get back in plenty of
time or push the limits and hit once last spot? Good
thing Robert had his say, because it paid off in a BIG way.
Popping a 10 lb + hog in the closing minutes proved to
be the difference maker. On most years their 28.2 lb
basket would probably have been enough to walk away
with the top prize but not this year.
Randy Franco and Nicholas Fortier of Billings had
their own plans. Building off last years third place
finish; this rapidly rising squad surpassed the thirtypound mark for a resounding victory and their first
Championship on the Montana Cats tour (and I doubt
the last). It wasnt always in the bag though. We had
a really slow first three, four hours of fishing and then
it just turned on, explained Nicholas. Relying on their
instincts and time on the water, they never panicked.
Landing an 11.26 lb Yellowstone River monster didnt
hurt matters either (Big Fish of tourney). Congrats
Randy and Nicholas on an outstanding tournament and
your FIRST MT CATS CHAMPIONSHIP!
The 2016 BNM Angler of the Year race is sure to be
a barn burner. Dont miss out on any more of the action!
There are still spots open in Monster Cat Roundup in
Sidney and Missouri River Catfish Clash in Williston.
Montana Cats events are like a brotherhood. youll
have to join up to see what all the talk is about. The
Montana Catfish Association would like to thank
the following sponsors for their continued support.
Without you, none of this would be possible. A huge
thanks goes out to: Pryor Creek Bar & Caf, Minnow
Bucket, Riverside Marine & Cycle (Miles City), KR

About the bottle in Mikes hand...

If you think thats a big bottle of

beer Mike Molvig is holding in the
photo on the front page, think again.
Its a jug of Linie Aquavit. Norwegians
mostly drink aquavit (water of life)
during holidays such as Christmas,
Easter, weddings, and of course
Syttende Mai.
The earliest known reference
to aquavit is found in a 1531
letter from the Danish Lord of
Bergenshus castle, Eske Bille to
Olav Engelbrektsson, the last
Roman Catholic Archbishop of
Norway. The letter, dated April
13, accompanying a package,
offers the archbishop some water
which is called Aqua Vite and is a
help for all sort of illness which a
man can have both internally and
externally.
Distilled from potatoes,
Linie Aquavit is a Norwegian
vodka infused with caraway,
dill, aniseed, sweet fennel and
coriander (the licorice-y caraway
dominates) and is most commonly
drunk as a kind of mouthwash between bites of ribbe
a cracklingly fatty pork roast around the holidays.
Actually, each nation around the Baltic Sea has its
own prevailing brand. The Danes have Aalborg and
the Swedes have O.P., but the Norwegian Linie is the
preferred choice of those who are non-Scandinavian.
Aquavit from Norway tends to have even stronger
flavors and a slightly darker color than its neighbors,
thanks to a year or more of aging in oak casks, like
whiskey. Linie takes that tradition even further, though:
the name is Norwegian for equator, because to this day,
each barrel is shipped around the world, from Norway
to Australia and back, crossing the equator twice during
the journey. They claim that the rocking in the boat, the
ocean air, and the changes in temperature and humidity
all go toward making it taste better, and its hard to argue
with the results.
Its gaining popularity in the United States as a
cocktail ingredient, although the elder Norske purists
would frown upon this, as they traditionally have a
good chug of beer followed by a shot of linie. And this
has been going on since the 15th century!
Oh well, for a stiff Bloody Mary, give Linie a try,
especially if youve got pickles in the mix.
