Algeria

By Joseph Yeager

Facts about Algeria

It is the largest country in africa, by area.
It is 80 percent desert, as it is covered by the Sahara.
It has only won five gold medals since it began participating in the
Olympics.
The highest temperature ever recorded in Algeria is 123.8 degrees.
Petroleum and gas make up 98% of their exports.
Women make up 60% of Algerias judges, 70% of the lawyers, and
60% of the student population.

Religion and Language

The largest religion in Algeria is Sunni Muslim, which makes up 99% of
the population. There are also about 50,000 christians and then the rest
are atheist or other. This is very different from a lot of countries because
many others have larger populations of the minority groups, not 99% of
a certain religion. The main language is Arabic at 72% and the second
language is Berber at 27.5%.

Ethnicity and Education

Arabs make up a large majority of the country at 82% with the Berber ethnicity
second with about 15%, and with about 4% of the population being turkish.
Education in Algeria is compulsory until 16 and is a free service, but college or
a secondary school enrollment is at about 50%.
Algeria
has over 30 universities and about 30
other secondary
schools. The literacy rate of Algeria
is at about 70%,
which is more than most of the
other countries in Africa,
but is still lower than
international standards.

Places To Go
Fly to Oran in Algeria, it is a 15 hour 50 minute flight there and costs
about $3,000. This would be the first stop because it is the closest,
since it is a coastal city with much ocean trade, so you get off the plane
sooner. It is also considered one of Algerias most important cities.
Would check in at the Royal Hotel Oran which is a 4.4 star hotel and is
$168 per night.

Second Day
Would take a visit of the University of Oran, which is one of the largest
universities in Algeria. It would not be considered a huge university by
American standards, but considering the amount of people that go to
secondary schools in Algeria, it is extremely large. Would then leave the
University and go to Fort Santa Cruz, which is a fort built by the spanish
in the 1500s and has been upkept ever since. Would then go back to
the hotel.

Third and Final Day

Would wake up and go to La Cathedrale du Sacre Coeur, which is a
church located in the almost middle of the city. Construction of the
church began in 1875 and finished in 1914, and it was consecrated after
the end of WWl. Would then travel to Le Theatre dOran, which was built
during the early 1900s, and watch a play before traveling back to the
airport and flying home.
