COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to introduce future scientists to genetics, the principles of


genetics, including topics from classical Mendelian concepts to the contemporary
molecular biology of the gene. Epigenetics and CRISPR technology will be
covered and the course includes a lab portion and a quiz to test your knowledge.
PREREQUISITES:

No prerequisites are needed for this course.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION:

This course will be taught using lectures, PowerPoints, hands-on laboratory


sessions, videos, and open discussion.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1. An understanding of the central theories and methodologies that define the


field of genetics and its various subdisciplines (e.g., molecular, population)
and the ability to use the vocabulary that embodies this knowledge.
2. Exposure to the latest developments in human genetics including
epigenomics and CRISPR technology
3. Understanding the following

DNA Structure

DNA Replication

Gene Expression: Transcription
iv.
Gene Expression: RNA Processing
v.
Gene Expression: Translation
4. The ability to develop a scientifically informed position on some of the
bioethical and biosocial issues related to the practice and application of
human genetics research.
GRADING

There will be a quiz administered at the end of class, grading is as follows:


100 90 = A
89 80 = B
79 70 = C
69 60 = D
59 and below = F

CLASSROOM CONDUCT:

Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that is conducive to


learning. Electronic devices are potential distractions in the classroom
environment. Cell phones, pagers and other handheld devices must be turned off
or set to "silent" mode and not used while class is in session. Laptop computers
and similar devices may be used only if such use is directly related to the
classroom activity.
