ABSTRACT
NEC is a multifactorial disease that causes ischemia and necrosis may appeal either
the small intestine either thick . It is the most common, serious and often fatal disease
of the gastrointestinal tract of preterm infants as well as term neonates . Early
diagnosis of the disease at the earliest possible stage plays a crucial role in better

restoring the health of newborns. The treatment of NEC includes medication and
surgery and depends mainly on the stage of disease . Timely diagnosis
and treatment of NEC have significantly reduced both morbidity and
mortality of the disease. Prevention strategies include human milk , adequate enteral
nutrition , prenatal administration corticosteroids , intestinal antibiotics , probiotics ,
prebiotics , the acidification of enteral feeding , arginine and erythropoietin.
