Comments:
This was a complaint about the way a walk-in tub was wired. Mrs. Johnson had
hired Cmmunity Builders, Inc. to install a new walk in tub. Community Builders was
responsible for the wiring, plumbing and constrcution work for this project. These
Walk-in tubs require 2 - 20 amp circuits. This tub was wired using a piece of 12/3
with ground romex in a 4 inch square box with out a connector, no GFCI
Receptacles or Breakers. The receptacles and 4" Sq. box was not fastened but left
laying on the floor under the tub. There was not a #8 ground wire to the tub
motor. Under the house, the wire was looped under and over some of the
plumbing pipe but was not stapled anywhere. At the outside panel, the 2 circuits
were installed on a ITE Twin breaker. The odd thing, in the panel was a black, red
and green wire but no neutral. Somewhere under the house a splice had been
made. Mrs. Johnson told me that the tub was not working correctly. I suggested
that she not use the tub until the wiring had been corrected. Community Builders
or their employees need to stop doing electric work. I was told by Mrs. Johnson
that a Nathan Kemper was the person that installed the tub, did the plumbing and
the wiring. I have a copy of the contract and I am appalled that she paid $6,000
down on this project. I told her that the Attorney General's Office advises against
doing this and that most reliable contractors do not require any money down. I
advised her against doing business with people that wanted large sums of money
up front. Community Builders and Nathan Kemper will be sent letters to stop doing
electrical work.
