Title: introduction to subtraction

Learning outcome: learn how to subtract 1-10


Wednesday period 1& 2: Double Maths
Whole: students are asked what they already know about subtraction (test prior
knowledge). Words that can be used other than subtraction are discuss (minus,
take away, less than, difference). Next the differentiation between subtraction
and addition is made clear. Different strategies in order to solve or work out
equations will be discussed (bigger number in head smaller in hands, drawing
pictures, using counters or other material, making lines like a tally). Followed by
worked example with pictures on the board.
Next students will participate in an online subtraction game using the interactive
white board all students will get a change to pop the balloons in order to get the
right answer

After this has been completed students will now re-create a subtraction game
like the balloon pop subtraction game. For example take away blocks, counters,
Popsicle sticks, pens students can also create their own objects. Students may
also wish to create a score board and rules for their game.
Whole: students can now share their game with their peers and have a go at
playing other games.
