COURSE RELATED
TO THE CLPNA
COMPETENCY.
PROVIDE AN
EXAMPLE

In this course I have learnt all the importance behind the knowledge of
understanding and being well aware of the changes that the human body goes
through during and after pregnancy. In order to provide your client(s) with
trustworthy information the LPN is required to know all the anatomical and
physiological changes during pregnancy. In theory we discuss all the changes
that not only the womans body experiences but also her emotions as well and
how important it is to be aware of these changes to provide the woman with
information in hopes to having a safe and successful pregnancy.

DESCRIBE WHAT
YOU LEARNED AND
HOW IT RELATES TO
THE COMPETENCY.
EXPLAIN WHY IT
WAS MEANINGFUL

I have learnt about body changes that occur normally only during pregnancy
and what these body changes consist of and look like. For example, women
tend to get stria during pregnancy which are also known as stretch marks,
women also get edema in their lower extremities, linea nigra, which is a dark
line under their umbilicus due to hormonal changes in the body, some women
experience skin changes such as a change in the pigment of their skin and/or
darkening of the skin on their palms. These are all normal very normal and
common changes to a womans body during pregnancy.

Good: Understands competency in theory, scenarios and nursing practice.

To achieve competency I attend theory class three times a week, and review
my notes at the end of every week. Maternity is a complex course and has a
lot of information to be known and in order for me to be able to succeed I
study my notes regularly so I am confident and able to put my knowledge to
use when I have a client who is asking questions about physiological and
anatomy changes during pregnancy.

DESCRIBE HOW YOU

WILL APPLY THIS
LEARNING IN YOUR
CURRENT AND
FUTURE NURSING
PRACTICE

I will use this learning in my current and future nursing practice by studying
all the different scenarios that my teacher has provided us with in class and on
moodle, and practice skills we learn in NISC labs about maternal and
newborn care so that I can feel comfortable and confident when I come in
contact with patients I will have in the future. By doing so I will be able to
provide my client(s) with a strong and healthy nurse-client relationship and
understand all the changes the mother and baby are going through at this
time.
