girl scout cookies and cups of juice.

Joy is fundraising for her Girl Scout troop. She is

selling Girl Scout Cookies and Juice. One box of
Girl Scout Cookies costs $1.50 and one bottle of
Juice costs $0.50. By the end of the day, she made a
total of $78.50. She sold 87 boxes of Girl Scout
Cookies and Juice Bottles combined. The next day,
she has to tell her Girl Scout Leader the number
of cookies and juices she sold. How many Girl
Scout cookies and how many Juices were sold?

x + y= 87

1. Solve one equation to get X alone

x + y = 87
-y -y ~~~~~ Subtract Y to get X alone
x = 87-y
2. Use substitution: Substitute X and solve for Y
1.50 (87-y) + 0.5y = 78.50 ~~~~~ Substitute X
(1.50 87) + (1.50 -y) = 130.5 0.5y ~~~~~ Use distributive property

130.5 1y = 78.50
-130.5
-130.5 ~~~~~ Subtract 130.5 on both sides
-1y = -52 ~~~~~ Divide -1 on both sides to get Y alone

3. Use substitution: Substitute Y and solve for X
