WHAT IS
PHOTOPLETHYSMOGRAPHIC
CARDIOTACHOMETER
?
Photoplethysmography
+ Cardiotachometer
Cardiotachometer

A heart rate monitor

Photoplethysmography-

Photo + Plethysmography
Plethysmography-A measurement technique used
to measure the volume changes in different parts
of the body.

OBJECTIVE
To measure heart rate
Why not use stethoscope ?
Why not ECG ?
And why PPG cardiotachometer ?

ALGORITHM :

The Signal from the finger tip

is extracted by using the principle
of photoplethysmographic
transduction .

The signal is then conditioned as

the raw signal from the sensor is
quite weak and is contaminated
with noise on the top of the DC
component.

Peak Detection using Sliding and

Climbing Peak detection method.

SIGNAL EXTRACTION
PRINCIPLE:

Photoplethysmography Measures changes in the

volume of the blood
in the blood vessels by
the reflection or
transmission of the light
from or through the
tissue .

WHAT CAUSES CHANGE IN VOLUME OF BLOOD ?

When the ventricles of the heart

contracts ,the volume of the blood
in the blood vessels, mostly in
arteries increases , thereby the
amount of light absorbed increases
so light reflected or transmitted
decreases.

When the ventricles of the heart

relaxes, the volume of the blood in
the blood vessels, mostly in arteries
decreases, the amount of light
absorbed thereby decreases so light
reflected or transmitted increases.

HOW IS ELECTRICAL PULSATION GENERATED ?

The change in the volume of

the blood within the artery will
directly affect the reflection
from or transmission through
the tissue to be received by the
photo detector thus generating
an electrical pulsation related
to plethysmography.

SIGNAL CONDITIONING

The signal is then conditioned using filters as the raw signal

from the sensor is quite weak and is contaminated with noise
on the top of the DC component.
