In The Studio

This article describes the conversation held between the esteemed artist James Welling
and journalist Steel Stillman. James Welling was bornn in 1951 in Hartford Connecticut. He first
attended Carnegie Mellon University, then California Institute of the Arts. He first focused on
painting and video, but has focused all attention on photography and is very good at it. His
breakthrough piece was images of crumpled foil that transformed into nocturnal landscapes. He
has an eye for imagery. He is now head of UCLAs Art Department in California and is revered
by his students. He has been featured in dozens of museums and galleries across the United
States, Japan and Europe. He discusses a portion of his art pieces and their meanings. He talks
about how being and artist is in his blood and he loves what he does.
This article really touched my heart. This man knows exactly what he wants in life, and
that is art. He is a respected man for his love of photography. He knows what will be intriguing
to viewers and he really plays on that. He has not felt pressured by having a grandfather and
father who were popular artists, he simply embraced it. He knew what he loved to do and wasnt
pressured by anyone to create a certain type of art, he just did what he wanted. I learned that
even though I may not grow up to be a respected photographer and artist, I need to have a
passion for what I do. Everyone comes from different walks of life and has different concepts of
what beauty is. I love oil painting and this article really inspired me to follow my dreams because
any goal is attainable.
