Harrison Dodds- Level 3

Unit Description:
Throughout the Heat Transfer unit
students explored the concepts of
conduction, radiation and convection
and developed an understanding of the
differences between these terms.
Students used their senses to touch, see
and feel heat transfer in action as they
participated in hands on activities: ice
race, feeling heat from different sources
(hot cup and flame), testing how water
heats in different colour tin cans as well
as created a solar oven.

The students used iPads to research
and develop their understanding of
heat transfer and communicated this
learning in the design and crea.on of a
solar oven in which to warm a
marshmallow. A Heat Booklet was
provided that students worked through
to document their learning throughout
the unit, the booklet is a/ached to this
report.

Convection can be seen

marshmallows in their solar oven after leaving it
under a heat source

Teacher Comment:

Harrison participating in an experiment.

Here he is feeling the heat radiating from
the candles flame.

Harrison was actively engaged during the

Heat Transfer unit and regularly shared his
ideas with his peers. His depth of knowledge
around the three different types of heat
transfers grew significantly and with this his
ability to use scientific terminology
continued to develop. He was able to
communicate his findings in a clear and
accurate manner. It has been a pleasure
working with Harrison.
