Today was a planning day with Ms. Roden. We went though the units of study that is covered in
Chemistry and look to see what would be a good fit for the study. We ultimately decided to use
the first two units in Semester Two which has to do with Stoichiometry and Balancing Equations.
The two units work hand in hand together, so it will be a good choice for the research study.

Today I worked on our goals for the research study. Those goals include the following:
Objective goals:
1. Students who are taught using the modern teaching method will perform at least
10% on the post-assessment than students taught with traditional methods
2. Students who are using technology will have at least a 5% increase in on-time
assignment turn in due to the ease of access.
3. The teacher will spend at least 10% less time on average grading assignments
because they can grade anywhere, anytime, on any device.
They also include the following subjective goals:
1. Students who used technology will be more engaged and more satisfied with
their learning than students who used traditional teaching methods.
2. The teacher will be more organized with appropriate technology set up and
running to have more time for teaching.
These will be set to measure the success of the project.

Today, I researched grant opportunities to fund a set of new equipment for the classroom. In
addition, I started working on updating her iPad 2s to iOS 9 so that we can start beta testing
apps to use during the study. We also researched apps in the App Store that we could use
throughout the study.

Wednesday, October 6th, 2015

Today, I completed the upgrade of the iPads in the classroom so they are ready for pilot testing
of some apps. We begin the process of applying for grants as well. We will be working on the
grant application for a while.

Today, I researched more apps that we can pilot for the research study. One of the main things
we want to pilot is using Canvas LMS for assignments, quizzes, and more all in one place.
Canvas has a iPad app and can be access anywhere. It connects to Google and to many other
services. We also continued filling out grant applications.

Tuesday, October 13th, 2015

Today, I worked on the grant application for the Classroom of Tomorrow. I conducted some
researched and created a budget for what we were going to request to use the funds for. In
addition, I also worked with Roden to begin creating a daily plan of the unit and what content will
be taught.

Thursday, October 15th, 2015

Today, I continued on the grant application and submitted to State Farm. Sorry this journal entry
is short. The application was very long.

Monday, October 19th, 2015

Today I did not work on my senior project as I had to repair some equipment around the school.
After school, I did conduct some more research as well as working to complete my capstone
funding request.

Wednesday, October 21, 2015

Today I began researching apps to purchase with my newly acquired capstone funding. I
received some money leftover in the VPP account. I now have to begin the process of setting up
a MDM server to distribute apps to iOS device.

Friday, October 23, 2015

Today, I continued working on finding apps that would be good to use for my project and
building a MDM server on site. I am having difficulty setting up the server because I have to go
through networking to get a public IP. Yep, a mess.

Today, the Internet was totally down (Wi-Fi and Ethernet) so unfortunately I could not work
further on the project. Just another day at West CTA!

Monday, November 2nd, 2015

Today, Mrs. Roden and I began setting up our test classes in Canvas. Canvas LMS will be our
primary solution for delivering content to students using technology.

Wednesday, November 4th, 2015

Today, I continued working in Canvas LMS to build the lessons for the test courses. During this
time, I am also training Mrs. Roden on Canvas so that she can continue to use it after the study.

Friday, November 6th, 2015

Continuation of November 4th.

Tuesday, November 10th, 2015

Continuation of November 6th.

Thursday, November 12th, 2015

Today, I continued my work in Canvas LMS and performed service on the iPads in preparation
for the study. The main change was to add Instructure apps such as Canvas and Polls by
Instructure.

Monday, November 16th, 2015

Today, I began working with Nearpod as an interactive component of teaching content. Nearpod
is a service that allows us to create lessons and homework and share to students. In class, all
students follow along on their devices and at home, they complete the assignment at their own
pace.

Continuation of November 16th.

Continuation of November 18th.

Monday, November 30th, 2015

Today we began building the quizzes portion of Canvas LMS. We are switching off of Quia
during the study. We worked on building question banks and quizzes in Canvas. These quizzes
will be used during the assessment of the study and will be the primary results for the studys
success.

Continuation of November 30th

Friday, December 4th, 2015

Today we started testing of all of our software. We will use 2nd period for purely equipment
testing purposes. They have their own Canvas LMS that we can try samples of content to
ensure it will run properly during the study.

December Summary
So since we're doing this now, here we go. The month of December flew by so fast because of
winter break, but that doesn't mean that we stop progress. The major event that I completed
was a test quiz in the class. We got second period enrolled into Canvas to test the Quiz feature.
We learned about how Canvas presents quiz questions so we know how to give a perfect quiz
every time. The other major event that we accomplished is that we finished uploading content to
one of our delivery systems, Nearpod which allows the teacher to present to the whole class,
but engage every student individually.

January Progress Update

So far this month, we accomplished a major event. We enrolled all of our iPads into Meraki
MDM which lets us push out apps wirelessly to all of the iPads without having to plug them into
the computer, which is much faster in getting new apps. We also began experimenting with CPS

Pulse response units that work without Internet, which at this school,
seems to happen on a daily basis.

February Progress Update

This month was all about the study. We actually conducted the study with third and fifth period.
Classes were given a pretest and a post test and we will compare the results when both units
are complete. We decided to use Google Classroom and SMART Amp during the study.
Students will do their homework and submit it to SMART Amp. Activities include notes, practice,
and homework. The test was given electronically with Quia. We will find the results in March.

March Progress Update

This month we finished the study and are now compiling data and creating the final presentation
over the results. From first impressions, we may not have data to suggest that the hypothesis is
correct. However, some our other SMART goals will have supportive evidence. We have been
using Infinite Campus to capture data and will export data from Infinite Campus and use Google
Sheets and Google Fusion Tables to compile data and make a final result.
