4. Do not print. READ STEP 5 for turn-in directions. Then, close your file.

computer called the ABC.

1943

Alan Turing designs colossus a computer to crack German codes.

1945

Dr. John von Neumann wrote a paper about how memory holds data and stores programs

1946

Dr. John W, Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert, Jr make the first large scale electronic purpose
general computer the ENIAC.

1947

William Shockley, Walter Brattain, and John Bardeen invent the transistor to replace

Introducing Computers
Jack Kilby invents the intergrated circuit making high speed computers with large memory
capacity possible.

1959

IBM introduces two small desk sized computers the IDM 1401 for business and the
IBM1602 fro scientist.

1960

Dr. Grace Hoper and others create COBOL to program computers.

1964

The IBM system/360 is the first family compatible computer merging science and
business.

1965

Dr. John Kemeny leads development for BASIC the programming language that will be
used in personal computers.

1968

Alan Shugart from IBM is the first person to use an 8- inch floppy disk , Dr Edsger
Dijsktra introduces the concept of structured programming .

1969

ARPANET the older version of the internet is established I BM pa ves the way for software
firms to rise after announcing that they will sell their software separately.

Bill Gates is given the opportunity to make the operating system for the IBM personal
computer and the Winchester hard drive revolutionized storage for personal computers.

The IBM Pc is introduced to the market launching IBM into the personal computer market

1982

Hayes introduces a 300 bps smart mode m which is an immediate success and a lot more
computers are sold then the previous year Compaq, Inc is founded to make IBM
compatible Pcs.

personal organizer and it stands out because of its low price and Microsoft releases

Compaq industry becomes the second largest computer firm by buying their competition
and Microsoft is asked to sell Windows without internet explorer
