Teacher instruction
T ask Ss what are rational numbers

0:08

Video is implemented to
prompt and support students'
mathematical development.
It works as a vehicle for
representation,
communication, reflection
and further learning by
enabling students to think
through various modelled
problems/ideas.

T ask: what are the types of fractions & what are some of their characteristics

Throughout the lesson, I

used appropriate language
according to the students
levels.
Students work in groups,
pairs or independently as
they work to deepen their
understanding and be
engaged throughout the
lesson.

0:27

Ss to give examples of proper fractions

0:48

Ss use white boards to draw & demonstrate the import fraction examples given
(i.e. drawing diagrams)
1:02

Teacher guidance
within the learning
environment will
enable & enhance
independent inquiry
and shared knowledge
building whilst linking
to real world situations.

Ss work with peers on whiteboards to provide examples of mixed numerals (i.e. expressing
the mixed numeral as parts of a whole e.g. pizza slices)
1:20

T ask to describe what is the relationship between the two fractions how are they the same,
how are they different, how does the diagram help etc
1:33

T ask to estimate what the mixed numeral will be (hard copy template of pizza slices will be
available for those who may need assistance)
2:10

Compare the answer to Ss answers and discuss how (the process) they got that answer
2:19

T to clarify students understanding of the process of converting improper fraction to a mixed

numeral may need to replay this example & give another example on the white board to
ensure students full understanding of the steps
2:50
This video encourages
students to develop &
clarify their
mathematical thinking.

T ask how might we get from a mixed numeral to an improper fraction

2:53

As a class, go through the steps to covert a mixed numeral to an improper fraction & clarify
Ss understanding - may need to replay this example and give another on the white board to
3:18

ensure students full understanding of the steps

When reflecting and reviewing the lesson as a class, students express their confidence in this
choice of resource (Youtube video) to support their learning.
I believe this ICT resource is a great way to develop student understanding of the core concepts
associated with Fractions & Decimals in stage 3. Students are able to use this resource remotely
by revisiting the video at home or in the classroom on iPads, and computers. Students then used
the worksheets along with concrete materials to assist working out & problem solving, as it was
used to reinforce the core concepts as well as being a mechanism for measuring the extent to
which students understood the lesson.
