curvecanbeverysevere.Anypartofthespine
canbeseverelydamaged.Mostcommonregions
wherescoliosisisinthechestareaorthelower
partoftheback.
WHATARETHECAUSESOFSCOLIOSIS
Therearemanytypesofscoliosis.

Congenitalscoliosisiscausedbyabone
abnormalitypresentatbirth.
Neuromuscular scoliosis is a result of
abnormalmusclesornerves.
Degenerative scoliosis is a result from
traumatic

bone

collapse.

Idiopathicscoliosisisthemostcommontypeof
scoliosis,ithasnospecificidentifiablecause.
INCIDENTSOFSCOLIOSIS
Ofevery1,000children,3to5developspinal

curves that are considered large enough to need

treatment. Scoliosis affects 23 percent of the


population,oranestimated6to9millionpeoplein
the United States. Scoliosis can develop in early
childhood. However, the primary age of onset for
scoliosisis1015yearsold,occurringequallyamong
bothgenders.Femalesareeighttimesmorelikelyto
progressforittobesobadthatitrequirestreatment.
Every year, scoliosis patients make more than
600,000 visits to private physician offices, an
estimated30,000childrenarefittedwithabrace,and
38,000patientsundergospinalsurgery.
HOWTOPREVENTSCOLIOSIS

Mostcasesofscoliosiscannotbeprevented.Thereis
no evidence that improving posture or doing
exercises can prevent it. In some cases, early
detection may prevent the condition from getting
worse.

RISKFACTORSFORSCOLIOSIS

Riskfactorsfordevelopingthemostcommontypeof
scoliosisinclude:
Age. Signsandsymptomsbeginduringthegrowth
spurtthatoccursjustbeforepuberty.Thisisusually
betweentheagesof9and15years.

Sex. Girls have a much higher risk of the curve


worsening.
Family history. Scoliosis can run in families, but
most children with scoliosis don't have a family
historyofthedisease.

CURRENTTREATMENTOPTIONS

There are three proven treatments for scoliosis:

observation, bracing, and surgery. The doctor will


recommend one of these treatments based on the
severityofthescoliosisandthephysicalmaturityof
thechild.
