State Content Standards

PE.03.EE.02 Demonstrate critical elements in manipulative skills: throw, catch, kick, and
strike

PE.03.EE.04 Demonstrate three different step patterns and combinations of movements

into repeatable sequences.

PE.05.EE.03 Through feedback and practice, demonstrate improvement in performance

of a new motor skill.

Objectives:
Students will:

Demonstrate how to pass a soccer ball using the inside of their foot.

Demonstrate how to respect self and others through social interaction.

Materials:

One soccer ball for each pair of students

Space

Modifications:

For those who cannot use their feet to kick, can roll the ball using their arms.

For students who do not want to work with a partner can use the wall to pass the ball.

Challenging students to pass the ball farther once they have the basic skills down.

Anticipatory set:

Student will find a partner and number themselves one or two.

Then all the ones from each pair will stand in a line. Arms-length between other
students.

All the twos from each pair will stand in a line 10 feet from their partner. Arms- length
between other students.

Activity Warm-Up:

First students will run around in a small area for about 8 minutes. Students will be given a
signal to stop every 2 minutes to stretch. Students are welcomed to go any direction they
want to.
Every time the students are signaled to stop, the teacher will demonstrate the first stretch.
Students will stretch their bodies by focusing mainly on their legs.

Students will sit down on the floor and put one leg out in front of them. Then
students will use both arms to try to touch the foot that is out in front of them.
(For 30 seconds)

After 30 seconds students will be given another signal to start to run around in the small
area again.
Then students will repeat the process until all three stretches are complete.

Students will now put their opposite foot out in front of them and use both arms to
touch their toe. (For 30 seconds)

Students will put both legs out in front of them and use both of their arms to touch
both feet.

Lesson Focus (Procedure):

Address safety issues: Space is important when kicking a soccer ball. All students
should have enough space for kicking. Another safety issue is making sure all students
are aware of other students who are kicking nearby. Stretching is important before
starting the activity to reduce the chance of injuries.

Instructions for passing the soccer ball:

o Students have the opportunity to choose their partner and number themselves
either one or two. (the teacher will make sure all students have a number)
o Once each student has their partner lined up across from them 10 feet, the number
ones will be given one soccer ball.
o The ones will set the soccer ball in front of their feet. All the twos will be
watching their partners follow directions.
o The teacher will then tell the ones to set their non-kicking foot (This vocabulary
word will be explained) next to the soccer ball without actually touching the
soccer ball.
o Then the teacher will explain the importance of using the inside of the foot to pass
the ball. This is because it helps direct the ball to go where you want to kick it.
o The non-kicking foot should be next to the ball with the toe pointing at their
partner. The students kicking foot should be behind the ball. The foot should be
turned to the side with both knees bent. The students head and chest need to be
over the ball, so that the ball stays on the ground.
o Students will then attempt to use the inside of their foot the pass the ball to their
partner.
o For students who have never used the inside of their foot when they are kicking
soccer ball might feel uncomfortable at first. Demonstrating to the students where
they should feel the sweet spot (where students should feel the ball on their feet
while kicking the ball)

o Once students are using the inside of the foot to pass the ball, students should start
to add a little hop before kicking the ball to give the pass a harder kick.
o Students should stand behind the ball, then step with their non-kicking foot next
to the ball and then hop and kick the ball using the inside of the foot.
o Students should continue to pass the ball back and forth with their partner.
Students should observe their partners when they do not have the ball.
o Once every student has the skill down, the teacher can increase the distance from
the students and their partners to add a challenge.
Closing Activity/Assessment:

Students are welcomed to come together in a small circle and discuss what important
elements make up a good inside of the foot pass.

The teacher can kick the ball to those students who wish to answer the question and then
the student will pass it back to the teacher.

Finally the teacher will answer any questions that students may have about passing the
ball using the inside of the foot.
