ECH 3701 REACTION KINETICS ENGINEERING

MINI PROJECT
The purpose of this mini project is to provide an opportunity for you to apply your
knowledge on multiple concepts learned in ECH 3701, specifically in a reactor
design and reaction kinetics. This mini project will count for 15% of your course
grade. Final project deliverables must be submitted in e-poster format by Monday,
June 6, 2016.

Your task is to design a reactor for the production of the chosen commodity
chemical. You can select any reaction process that interest you most.
Your report should cover the following elements but not limited to:
Week 1: Process selection
You are required to find minimum three pathways to produce the desired products
and provide justification on the selected pathway. Your selection should include the
sustainable development issues.
Week 2: Reaction kinetics data
You may obtain the data from the literature e.g. journals, reports and patent
(textbook data is not allowed!)
Week 3: Reactor Design
You should include mass and energy balances, multiple reactions (calculation of
selectivity, yield if necessary) and reactor selection. The reactor analysis should use
any software e.g. excel, POLYMATH, and Matlab and etc.
Week 4: Discussion on the impact of your design based on safety, health and
environment aspects

Note:
1. The marks will be given according to the progress presented in each week.
Week 1- 10% (due on May 23, 2016)
Week 2- 20 % (due on May 30, 2016)
Week 3- 50 % (due on June 6, 2016)
Week 4- 10% (due on June 13, 2016)
Poster - 10% (due on June 17, 2016)
2. Specifications of e-poster
The entire poster must be in A3 size. There is no specifications on font type, font size
and design of your poster. It is entirely up to you. But please limit the text to about
one-fourth of the poster space, and use "visuals" (graphs, diagrams, schematics,

etc.) to tell your "story." You may refer the example of poster layout as shown in
Figure 1.
