WHAT IS A NEONATOLOGIST?

A neonatologist is a pediatrician who specializes in treating newborn infants.

DUTIES:

When babies are born prematurely, with a birth defect or with a serious illness,
a neonatologist may assist with the delivery and attend to the newborns
medical needs.

Neonatologists consult with obstetricians if pre-natal sonograms suggest the


possibility of a birth defect or disease.

EDUCATION:
You need a four-year bachelor of science degree
First two years:
anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and pharmacology

Final two years:


rotations in medical specialties, including pediatric medicine

YOU ALSO NEED:

Three-years of residency

then complete a fellowship in neonatology for their final years of studies
