When Summer Comes Helen Naylor
Summary
The story opens in London, during a heatwave. The
central characters are Anna and Stephen, who have
been married for ten years. Anna is a nurse and
Stephen works for an advertising agency. Both are
anxious to leave the stresses of London behind them,
as they finish work for a three week holiday on the
Cornish coast, in south west England. Stephen leaves
work with the threat of redundancy hanging over him,
but finds it difficult to talk about his worries with Anna.
They arrive in the idyllic coastal village of Polreath,
where they have rented a cottage from a local
fisherman, Tristan Goddard. Their holiday starts well
but after just one day Stephen is called back to London
for a crisis meeting in the office. Anna is left alone in
Polreath and spends much of the time with Tristan.
They become increasingly attracted towards one
another, though Anna tries not to admit this to herself.

Stephen returns with the news that he has been made

redundant. He is in fact relieved and longs to escape
London. Together with Anna he makes plans to buy
the cottage they are renting from Tristan and move to
Polreath permanently. Meanwhile, Anna realises the
strength of her own attraction to Tristan and while
they are out alone together on his boat they make
love. Anna immediately feels very guilty and resolves
never to tell Stephen. A few days later she returns to
London to make plans for leaving her job. While she is
alone in London she realises that Stephen is the most
important person in her life and decides that she must
tell him that they cannot live in Polreath. Stephen
phones her that evening and tells Anna that they must
talk Tristan has told him something.
