New Orleans
What to See

ew Orleans is the largest city in the

state of Louisiana.
The City is named after the Duke of New
Orleans, the city is well known for its
French and Spanish creole architecture.
New Orleans is also popular for its:
music, cuisine, festivals, & celebrations.

The French Quarter, also

known as the Vieux Carr, is the oldest

neighborhood in the city of New Orleans. After New Orleans was founded
in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de
Bienville, the city developed a central
square. The district is more commonly called the French Quarter today, or
simply The Quarter, related to changes
in the city with American immigration
after the Louisiana Purchase. Most of
the present-day historic buildings were
constructed during the late 18th century,
during the citys period of Spanish rule,
and reflect Spanish colonial architecture.
The district as a whole has been designated as a National Historic Landmark,
with numerous contributing buildings
that are separately deemed significant.
It is a prime tourist destination in the
city, as well as attracting loyal residents.
Because of its distance from areas where the levee was breached during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, it suffered relatively
light damage as compared to other areas of the city and the greater region.

City Park, a 1,300 acre public park in New Orleans, Louisiana, is the 6th-largest and 7th-most-visited urban public
park in the United States. City Park is approximately 50% larger than Central Park in New York City, the municipal park
recognized by Americans nationwide as the archetypal urban greenspace. Although it is an urban park whose land is
owned by the City of New Orleans, it is administered by the City Park Improvement Association, an arm of state government, not by the New Orleans Parks and Parkways Department. City Park is very unusual in that it is a largely self-supporting public park, with most of its annual budget derived from self-generated revenue through user fees and donations. In the wake of the enormous damage inflicted upon the park due to Hurricane Katrina, the Louisiana Department
of Culture, Recreation and Tourism began to partially subsidize the parks operations.
City Park holds the worlds largest collection of mature live oak trees, some older than 600 years in age. Its founding in
1853 also makes it one of the oldest parks in the country.
Bourbon Street comes alive at night, particularly during the French Quarters many festivals. Most popular among
these is the annual Mardi Gras celebration, when Bourbon Street teems with hundreds of thousands of tourists. Local
open container laws in the French Quarter allow drinking alcoholic beverages in the street. Popular drinks include the
hurricane cocktail, resurrection cocktail and Huge Ass Beers - a large plastic cup of draft beer marketed to tourists at

a low price.
