Thegoalsofthiscoursearetocoverthebasicsofbothdescriptivestatisticsandinferentialstatistics.Descriptivestatisticsareusedtoorganizeand
describesetsofobservations(data).Inferentialstatisticsprovideinsightintocharacteristicsofapopulationofinterestbasedonasamplefromthat
population.Emphasiswillbeonbothconceptualunderstandingandcalculationskills.
Exams:Therewillbeonemidtermexam,afinalexam,andweeklyhomework.Eachexamwillhaveacombinationofmultiplechoiceitemsand
computationproblems.Yourfinalgradewillbebased40%onthefirstexam,50%onfinalexam,and10%onthehomework.Examscoverall
lectures,readings,andhomeworkassignments.Anyonewhomissesanexamreceiveszeropointsforthatexamunlessavalidexcuseisverified.
Note:Wewillnotbeabletogiveamakeupfinalifyouhavetoomanyfinalsonthatdayorafinalexamconflict.
HomeworkandSectionmeetings:Homeworkmustbeturnedinatthebeginningoflectureonthedatelistedonthehomework.YoursectionTA
willreturnandgooverhomework(duringthefirstsectionmeetingaftereachhomeworkisturnedin),answerquestions,andworksupplemental
problems.Sectionmeetingswillbeginduringthesecondfullweekofclass(weekofOctober5 th).Youarenotrequiredtoattendsection,butitis
highlyrecommended.
