Althoughslaveryitselfisaterriblething,anewmoreterrifying,secretive,andextremely
twistedformofslaveryisbecomingmorepopularacrosstheworld,specificallyinparticular
regionsofAfrica.Peopleallaroundtheworld,especiallyinAfricancountries,arebeingtakenby
predatorsassexslaves,childsoldiers,prostitutes,andsoonforthepurposeofpersonaland
economicalprofit.HumanTraffickingcanbereducedbygovernmentintervention,public
awareness,andexpressingtheharshnessoftheissue.
Poverty,jobstatus,andundocumentationarethemaincausesofwhytraffickingisso
widelyabused.Povertyisoneofthemajorcausesofwhyhumantraffickingisstillwidely
popularinSouthAfrica.Hartclaimsthat,Povertyandretrenchmentintheseplacesmakes
peoplemorevulnerable,(Hart48).Lowincomeandnojobsputmorepeopleatfurtherriskto
theharshrealityofhumantrafficking
.
Notonlydoestheireconomicalstatusputpeoplein
harm'sway,usuallythewomensjobstatusalsoputsthematrisk.ResearchbyAdenekanstates
that,Theyareoftenluredbypromisesofsteadyemploymentasshopkeepers,housemaids,
seamstress,nanniesorhotelservicepositionsandattendantsinthemajorEuropeancountriesand
areeventuallyforcedintoprostitution(AfricaFiles).Protectingwomenfrombeingtrafficked
throughillegaldocumentationhasbeenoneofthemanywaystocatchthetraffickers.Just
becauseonewayisthebestwaytoresolveanissue,doesn'tmeanthatitwillbeused.According

totheauthor,Traffickinginpersonsisamajorinternationalissuebutpoordocumentationin
southernAfricaismaskingtheextentofthismoderndayslavery(HumanTrafficking).This
provesthatallprecautionstosolvetheissueofhumantraffickingarentbeingputtouse.The
longerthatthegovernmentputsoffthisissuethemorepeoplearebecomingvictimstohuman
trafficking.
WomenandChildrenarethemainpeoplewhoareaffecteddailybythemistreatmentof
humantrafficking.Womenthataretraffickedusuallymeettheforeignculture,andarethemain
magnetsforhumantraffickers.AccordingtoBryson,Someresearcherscontendthatlegalized
sexindustriesareamagnetforhumantraffickerstobringinforeignanddomesticwomento
meettheopendemand(Bryson).GirlsandBoysarethemainonesaffectedwhenitcomestoa
startinganepidemic.Girlsaretakenfrompreviouslifestylestobebroughtintotrafficking,while
boysarebeingtrainedinbecominghumantraffickers.AsstatedbyBurundi,Burundiangirls
arealsotraffickedtoKenya,MalawiandUgandaforcommercialsexualexploitation
(Burundi).Boysthatsubmittowarlordsinordertosurviveandthenbecometrappedina
cycleofviolence,movingfromvictimtowarrior(Protecting).Itisclearthattraffickerstake
childrenbecauseoftheirneedforchildrenexperimentation.AccordingtoUNESCO,They
engageinsexwithchildrenbecausetheyareusuallymorallyand/orsexuallyindiscriminateand
wishtoexperimentwithchildsexualpartners,orchildrenthatmeettheiridealsofphysical
attraction
(RootCauses).Traffickersareattractedtothetypesofchildrenthatmeettheir
specificprofile.Eachoneofthesecausesarespecificpeopletargetedwhohavenegativeeffects
onthesociety.

Theeffectsofhumantraffickingareseeminglyneverendingandareonavast
scale.Childrenseemtobetheoneswhoarebeingaffectedonalargerscalebyhuman
trafficking.NotedbythehumantraffickingSearchgroup,Childrenmaybegreatlyimpactedin
theiremotionalandphysicaldevelopmentwhentheyareforcedtoliveinanunhealthy
environmentawayfromtheirfamilyandlovedones(Modern).Sincehumansdomostoftheir
maturingintheirchildhoodandadolescence,itsquiteclearhowtheircouldbedevelopmental
delaysduetohumantrafficking.Ifachildwasforcedtogrowuptoofasttheirdevelopment
couldbethrownoffbyalandslide.Notonlyistheirmentalstateaffectedsoaretheirphysical
state.TheHumanTraffickingSearchgrouphasalsoinformedpeopleontheeffectsofsex
traffickinginthefollowing,Sexualexploitationalsoincreasesexposuretodeadlydiseases,
includingHIVandAIDS(SouthernAfrica).Onbothsidesofthespectrumthesedeadly
diseasescanspreadlikeahayfire.Forinstance,ifoneofthevictimshasasexuallytransmitted
diseasethepredatorthengetsthediseaseandspreadsittotheothervictimshethenengagesin
sexualactivitywith.Thesepeoplearebeingmistreatedandneglectedoftheirnecessities.If
nobodydoesanythingaboutit,theoutcomecouldbecatastrophic.
TherearemanythingsthathavebeenimplementedtostophumantraffickinginAfrica.
Themainsupportersthataretheretostopitarethecompaniesinvolved.Oneofthemajor
companiesisagroupcalledUNICEFwhomainlyhelpswithchildsoldiering.TheUS
DepartmentofStatesaysthat,WithUNICEFfunding,thecommissionsstaffprovidedmedical
checkupsforchildrensufferingfromphysicalandpsychologicaltraumaandconductedsearches
fortheirfamiliestheformerchildsoldierswerereunitedwiththeirfamiliesinJuneandJuly
afterparentssignedadischargefrom(Burundi).Thegroupstrytheirbesttoreturnthe

traffickedpeoplebacktotheirnormallivesbeforethetraumaticeventsoccurred.Theyalsoare
tryingtothebestoftheirabilitytopreventsthesethingsfromhappeninginthefirstplace.There
goalistokeepthepeoplehappy,justasthegovernmentistryingtodo.ItisinformedbytheU.S
DepartmentofStatethat,Governmentdepartmentstookpreparatorysteps,suchasdeveloping
regulationsandpolicydirectives,tobereadytoimplementthelegislationuponenactment
(SouthAfrica).Thoughthegovernmentmaybebehindontryingtoimplementtheserules,
theyarepreppingthemselvesforthelawsthataregoingtobeplacedinordertopreventthese
thingsfromhappeningagain.Notonlydocompaniesandgovernmentofficialstrytoendthis
newformofslavery,campaignslikethoseofthemultisectoralnationaltaskteam,areputting
intoeffectinSouthAfrica.Itissaidthat,Theteamhasspearheadedthedevelopmentatthe
NationalActionPlantofighthumantraffickinginSouthAfrica(SouthAfrica).Manygroups
aregoingouttosupporttheNationalActionPlanindifferentregionsofAfrica,mostlySouthern
Africa.Thisspecificreasonhelpspreventoppressionanddegradation.
Forthesespecificreasonshumantraffickingmattersbecauseitoppresseswomen.The
causesofhumantraffickingleadwomentobedrawnintoprostitutionwhichcauseslargerissues.
WiththeUNICEFhelpingfundmedicalcheckupsforchildrensufferingthroughtheeffectsof
beingtrafficked,theremaybearesolutiontostoptheabuse.Ultimatelyleadingtothedegrading
oftheyoungersocietyoftraffickedchildren.Inaway,thechildrenbeingforcedintothe
traffickingprocesslosetheiryouth,duetothedemandofbeingexploited,sold,orwidely
abused.IfthereisntsomethingdonetopreventabuseofhumantraffickinginAfrica,matters
willonlygetworse.
