TheBerkeleyrevoltwasoneofthefirstmajorstudentprotestingthe1960sandit
becameamodelforothers.

HippiesrejectedTraditionalmiddleclassvalues
TheywantedtobuildaUtopiaasocietythatwasfreer,closertonature,andfull
oflove,Empathy,Tolerance,andcooperation.
Muchofthiswasarejectiontothe1950sstereotypeofthewhitecollarmanin
thegrayflannelsuitwholedaconstrictedandcolorlesslife.
DefinedthehippiemovementLonghair,NativeAmericanheadbands,cowboy
boots,longdresses,shabbyjeans,andtheuseofdrugs.
Communesgrouplivingarrangementsinwhichmemberssharedeverythingand
workedtogether.
OneofthemostfamoushippiedestinationswasSanFranciscosHaightAshbury
district.

ARenewedWomensMovement
FeminismThebeliefthatmenandwomanshouldbeequalpolitically,
economically,andsocially.
OriginsoftheMovement
Womenfoundthemselvesshutoutofhigherpayingprofessionssuchas
law,medicine,andfinance.Bythemid1960s,about47percentof
AmericanWomenwereintheworkforce,butthreefourthsofthemworked
inlowerpayingclerical,salesorfactoryjobs,orascleaningwomenand
hospitalattendants.
OnestimulusthatinvigoratedthewomensmovementwasthePresidents
CommissionontheStatusofWomenestablishedbyPresidentKennedy
andheadedbyEleanorRoosevelt.
EqualPayActwhichinmostcasesoutlawedpayingmenmorethan
womenforthesamejob.
BettyFriedantriedtodescribethereasonsfortheirdiscontentinherbook
TheFeminineMystique,publishedin1963.Becameabestseller.
TheTimeIsNow
TheNationalOrganizationforWomen(NOW)andtheeditorofthemagazine
wasGloriaSteinemAnauthorwhobecameoneofthemovement'sleading
figures.

Repatriationwhenfederalofficialsdeportedmanyimmigrantsfrommexicoand
theiramericanbornchildrenaswellandreturnthembacktomexico.
In1929anumberofMexicanAmericanorganizationscametogethertocreatethe
LeagueofUnitedLatinAmericanCitizens.(LULAC)Thepurposeofthis
organizationwastofightdiscriminationagainstpersonsofLatinAmerican
ancestry.
AnotherLatinoorganization,theAmericanGIForumwasfoundedtoprotectthe
rightsofMexicanAmericanVeterans.
Intheearly1960s,CesarChavezandDoloresHuertaorganizedtwogroupsthat
foughtforfarmworkers.
ChavezandHuertamergedtheirtwoorganizationsintoonetheUnitedFarm
Workers(UFW).
MAYOssuccessandthespreadofprotestsacrossthewestandsouthwest
convincedgutierreztofoundanewpoliticalpartyLaRazaUnida,ortheUnited
People,in1969.LaRazapromotedLatinocausesandsupportedLatino
candidatesinTexas,California,Colorado,Arizona,andNewMexico.
Oneissuemanylatinoleaderspromotedinthelate1960swasbilingualismthe
practiceofteachingimmigrantstudentsintheirownlanguagewhiletheyalso
learnenglish.
Congresssupportedtheirarguments,passingtheBilingualEducationActin
1968.Thisactdirectedschooldistrictstosetupclassesforimmigrantsintheir
ownlanguagewhiletheywerelearningenglish.
