Recognise the letters of the alphabet and know there are lower- and upper-case
letters (ACELA1440)

Part of Standard(s) and Learning Outcome(s):


Standards: They identify the letters of the English alphabet.
Learning outcomes:
- demonstrate the understanding of upper case and lower case letters
- demonstrate the understanding of the sounds of the letters k and w.

Indicators:
- students are actively participating in completing each rotation.
- students are able to correctly perform the sound of the letters k and w.

Assessment:
Success Criteria (2 or 3 to match indicators):
-students can accurately identify a work starting with the letter k and w.
-students can correctly perform the sounds of the letters k and w.

Assessment strategies and feedback:
Through engaging in conversations with the students, I will be able to identify
who has the knowledge of the letters k and w.
Feedback will be provided to students in the form of constructive feedback,
allowing them to improve.

This lesson I have chosen to focus on providing students with feedback that will
assist them in developing the understanding of the letters k and w.

I am aware that the students have prior knowledge of upper case and lower
case letters. I will be able to assess their current knowledge around the letters k
and w when I am engaging in conversations with the students about their work.

Windmill pictures
Kristas art folio
Coloured squares
Streamer material
Ipads.

Content of Lesson:
A.
Introduction
__10__ mins
Inform students of the lesson focus-letters k and w.
Go through the activities with the students- windmills-using squares on the
windmill arms and streamers on the trees etc.
Inform the student that there will be rotations, and ipads will be included.

B.
Development
__10__ mins
Ask the students what to do at each rotation
Teacher to revisit what to do at each rotation, allow students to answer to
make other students aware.

C.
Consolidation and Practice
__30__ mins
Letter K-see Kristas art folio.
Letter W- place coloured squares on windmill arms, and scrunch streamers for
the background and place them on the sheet.
Ipads/computers- to play games.
Reading in the book corner.

Early Finishers Extension Activities


Students who finish early can watch other students on the ipad or read quietly
to them seleves-book boxes, or book corner.

Closure

Revisit the letters with the students and the sounds of each letter.
Revisit the sentence for each letter with the students and get a student to
identify the letters k and w in each sentence.
