Brunei uses the Brunei dollar as currency and Malay is the official language. Brunei was controlled by Britain from 1888 to 1984 and was occupied by Japan during World War 2. Today it is a monarchy led by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah since 1967. Brunei has a literacy rate over 95% and education is free through middle school. The majority religion is Sunni Islam.
