Children's language stage materials should include familiar everyday objects. Materials language stage uses similar open-ended materials like blocks and counters. Mathematical language stage has students continuing to use complex materials like attribute blocks for sorting and problem solving. Symbolic language stage needs no materials, as students draw pictures to represent groups of materials used and record numbers and basic symbols but no advanced symbols yet.
