ingly bigger, said Courtney Brunious, associate director of the University of Southern Californias
Sports Business Institute. You see
these new media rights deals pushing
more and more money into the power
conferences.
The University of Texas Longhorn
Network appears to be a major expansion roadblock. Many conference
leaders would prefer to create a Big
12 network to generate more money.
But for the Big 12 to create a network, it would require Texas to most
likely give up its own network.
Youve got to make Texas financially whole, University of Oklahoma President David Boren said this
month, according to CBSSports.com.
You cant expect them to give up $15
million (a year).
Texas TV deal could be a reason
Boren has quelled his enthusiasm for
expansion. He had been the most
outspoken Big 12 leader on expansion
until Oklahomas board of regents
reportedly said in mid-May they did
not favor adding schools.
Boren had been an ally for UC, but
thats in question now. As chair of the
Big 12 board of directors, Boren has
major influence in the decision.
I think we kind of got out ahead of
ourselves, Boren told reporters.
Somehow, the speculation got out
ahead of what the reality on the
ground is. I personally do not have
any candidates at this point.
