SHIP HYDRODYNAMICS
HOMEWORK #1

1) Please answer the questions below.

a) Find at the point (1, 2) if (, ) = 2 + 2 .
b) Find the divergence of the vector
= (4 2 3 ) + ( ).
2) Air with density 1.225/3 is being
flown into a pipe with 40/ velocity.
The pipe has varying cross-section and
the air enters the pipe from a 602
area. The air leaves the pipe with
150/ velocity and 1.108/3.
Find;
a) the mass flow rate inside the pipe,
b) the cross-sectional area of the
outlet.

V=40m/s

V=150m/s

3) Consider a steady, inviscid and incompressible flow with a two-dimensional velocity field,
= 2 2

Find the pressure gradient along x-axis. Neglect gravitational effects.

4) The fluid inside a rectangular twodimensional box is flowing out from a

hole underneath the box as shown in
the figure. The height of the fluid at
the start is = 40. Assuming that
the flow is inviscid and irrotational,
please find the initial velocity of the
flow from the hole.

5) Consider a deep towing tank with a wave maker that produces a regular wave with
amplitude = 0.15 with a period = 1.
a. Find the wave frequency , the wave number , the wave length and the
propagation speed .
b. Calculate the potential of the wave at:
i. = 0, = 0, = 5.
ii. = 20, = 0, = 5.
iii. = 40, = 0, = 5.
iv. = 60, = 0, = 5.
c. Graph the potential versus position for a fixed = 0 and = 5.
6) Calculate the position of a particle whose location in the Cartesian coordinate system is
( , ) = (0,0). The characteristics of the wave are;
= 2, = 11 , = 1 1

Start from = 0 and take the time step size as = /6. Complete at least two cycles and
plot

the particle orbit diagram ( vs. )

horizontal position of the particle ( vs. )
vertical position of the particle ( vs. )

Give your answers for

a. Deep water condition

b. Shallow water condition
