SWBAT break down and analyze the properties
of sound.

Do Now
1. What do you THINK sound is?
2. Do you know what a sound wave is/ how they're
created?
3. Do you think sound travels?

What Is Sound?
Sound: A Disturbance That Travels Through a medium as a Longitudinal wave.

The Process Of Sound Waves

In Order for sound to occur a disturbance has to occur. This disturbance is usually
made by a vibration. The vibrations will then disturb near by air particles creating
longitudinal waves ( A longitudinal wave is a wave spreading in the direction of
vibration.)

*Make a sound by clapping your hands or snapping your fingers. ( What caused the
sound you made?)

How Sound Travels?

Sound Waves: A wave of compression and rarefaction in which air is
propagated (circulated) in an elastic medium such as air.
Sound waves carry energy through a medium( A medium being a gas, liquid,
or solid.) As the disturbance passes each particle of the medium vibrates thus
creating sound once the disturbance reaches your ears.

What Are The Interactions Of Sound Waves?

Reflection: Also Known as an echo is created by a sound wave hitting a surface. A
reflection varies based on the surface sound waves hit. Harder surfaces= stronger
reflections/echoes. When a sound wave hits a soft object the soft materials may
absorb most of the sound that strikes causing little to no echos.
Diffraction: This is the process of sound waves traveling through openings and being
able to bend around corners.
Interference:When sound waves meet and interact with each other. When sound
waves meet the interference can be constructive or destructive. Constructive sound
interference builds sound up. Destructive sound interference deteriorates or
decreases sound.
