Confidence Interval Estimates
The purpose of Confidence Intervals is to estimate the true value of a population
proportion by using a sample proportion. We use a confidence interval, rather than a
single value to estimate more accurate results.

95% Confidence Interval for the true proportion of purple candies

= 0.05
n = 894
x = 193
z = 1.96
0.1890 < p < 0.2429

Based on the calculations from our data, we are 95% confidence that the interval
between 0.1890 and 0.2429 contains the true value of the population proportion p. This
means that if we were to select many different samples of size 894 and construct the

corresponding confidence intervals, 95% of them would contain the value of the
population proportion p.
True mean # of candies per bag at 99% confidence.

n=14

x = 59.6
s = 3.795
99% CI
= 0.01
t a/2 = 2.650
DF = 13
58.608 < < 60.592

Based on the calculations from our data, we are 99% confident that the interval from
actually does contain the true value of . This means that if we were to select many
different samples of the same size and construct the corresponding confidence
intervals, in the long run 99% of them would actually contain the value of .

Standard Deviation of # of candies per bag at 98% confidence

98% CI
= 0.02
n = 15
s = 3.795
DF = 14
R = 29.141
L = 4.660

Based on this result, we have 98% confidence that the limits of 2.630 and 6.578 contain
the true value of .
Hypothesis Tests

Claim: 20% of all Skittles candies are red, with a 0.01 significance level.
(p=0.20)
H : p = 0.20

H: p 0.20
two tail test
= 0.01
p = 0.025
p0 = 0.2
q = 0.83
n = 894
z = -2.241
p value = 0.025

Fail to reject the null.

There is not sufficient evidence to warrant rejection of the claim that 20% of all Skittles
candies are red.

Claim: The mean number of Skittles in a 2.17 oz bag is 56. (p=55)

Fail to reject.
There is not sufficient evidence to warrant the rejection of the claim that the mean
number of candies in 2.17oz bag of Skittles is 56.
