Weve been told to drink lots of water every day. Water sustains
life, besides slowing down the ageing process. Unfortunately, our
drinking water may be shortening our life instead of prolonging
it. Thats because our water today often contains a cocktail of
potentially deadly toxins bacteria, viruses, parasites, chemicals,
pharmaceutical effluents and others.
Heavy metals are not easily removed since many conventional water treatment
systems utilise only a single medium such as sand, ceramic or fibre. Furthermore,
heavy metals require physical removal from water, unlike bacteria and viruses
which can be inactivated through a simple ultraviolet treatment system. Only top
quality water purification systems have the ability to purge heavy metals, as well as
other contaminants, and yield pure water.
Reverse osmosis (RO) is the best water treatment technology for the solution to the
heavy metal crisis. It is used worldwide in any situation that demands high purity
water, such as hospitals, the food industry, beverage production, hotels, etc. Even
NASA the space agency uses RO systems.
In the RO process, water is forced through a special semi-permeable membrane,
which has incredibly small pores that allow water molecules to pass through.
Virtually all other contaminants heavy metals, inorganic and organic contaminants,
chemicals residues, drug traces etc. cannot pass through the membrane.
One of the worlds leading RO systems, Elken Bio Pure utilises an advanced 5-stage
purification technology to remove contaminants as minute as 0.0001 micron in
diameter 500,000 times tinier than the diameter of a strand of hair to yield pure
water thats virtually free from all heavy metals.
Out of these, one of the most pressing concerns in our drinking water is heavy metals. In fact, for municipally treated
tap water, heavy metals are often the greatest concern, since they can leak into our water supply through outdated
plumbing, thus posing a serious health risk1.
Commonly used in manufacturing and older plumbing, heavy metals can be toxic in incredibly small amounts and can
cause serious health damage, even death, when consumed over the long term. One of the problems is that heavy
metals are most often odourless and undetectable. For example, exposure to manganese can go on for years without
detection due to the slow and subtle effect it has on the body2.
Here are some of the most common and dangerous heavy metals often found in our water.
Heavy Metal How it gets into our water
Lead
Manganese
Arsenic
Skin damage
Problems with circulatory system
Increased risk of getting cancer5
