LittleisknownaboutWilliamShakespeare'sactuallife,mostlyduetothepoorrecordsof
thetimeperiod,butwhatwedoknowisjustenoughtoputtogetherallthepieces.Hewas
supposedlybornonApril23,1564,3daysbeforehewasbaptized.(therewasnotimetowaste
backthen)Hewasfromafamilyof8children,wholivedinasmallvillageabout100milesfrom
London,(Europescrownjewelatthetime)whereheenjoyedalifeinthecountry,learningall
aboutallsortsofdifferentsubjects,likeancienthistory,Latin,grammar,andevenRoman
Comedy!
Shakespeare'sfamilywasratherdeepindebt,sohenevercouldattendcollegeashe
turned18,insteadhemarriedthe26yearoldAnneHathaway,withwhomhehadhisfirstchild,
Susana,intheyear1583,andthetwins,HamnetandJudithin1585.Afterhischildrenareborn,
theresabitofaholeintherecords,andhistorianshaveknowideawherehespentthenext7
yearsofhislife.Historiansrefertothisperiodasthelosttime.Butwhattheydoknowisthat
in1596,ShakespearesufferedthedeathofhisonlysonHamnet.ThenexttimethatShakespeare
reappearsisintheyear1592,inapamphletbyRobertGreen.Evidentlythisisthetimeperiod
whenhisworkstartstoberecognized,andhereallyhithisstride.

Between1590and1594,ShakespearehadwrittenTamingoftheShrew,The
ComedyofErrors,LovesLabour'sLost,andTheTwoGentlemenofVerona,allofwhich
blatantlymadehisnameknowninthetheatercommunity.Thepictureofsuccess,Shakespeare
usedhisnewfoundwealthtobuythesecondbiggesthouseinthecityofStratfordin1597.He
eventuallybecameamemberoftheLordChamberlainsMen(themostprestigiousgathering
oftheaternerdssincetheschoolsSpringMusical)whereheoftenfoundhimselfperformingin
frontofQueenElizabeth(TheFirst).Shakespeareenteredoneofhismostproductiveperiods,
creatingRomeoandJuliet,RichardII,TheMerchantofVenice,andAMidsummer
NightsDream.(Thelatterofwhichisprettydarnawesome)AftertheriseofKingJamesin
1603,TheBardwrotesomeofhisbestworkconcerningthehandlingofpowerand
responsibility,suchasMacbethandKingLear.
AsShakespearegrewsickintohisoldage,(whichbackthenwashis60shedecidedto
leavealmostallofhismoneytohistwodaughters,sincehisonlysondiedearlyon.Hehadset
asidemoneyandgiftsforhisfriendsandtheaterpartners,butoddlyenough,beforehediedhe
leftThefamilyssecondbestbedtohiswife,AnneHathaway.HediedonApril23,thesame
dayhewasborn.Afeatwhichinitselfwasjustpoeticenough,foroneofhistorysmostfamous
writers.
