Grammatical sentence
structure (syntax)
Grammatical sentence structure, also known as syntax,
is the order in which words are put together.
English word order is the subject, verb, then object.
For example: I (subject) bought (verb) a new
computer (object).
In ASL the word order is when, where, what, who, doeswhat, and how/why, where the order for ASL is the
object then subject then the verb.
For example: DOGS (object) IX- you (subject) LIKE
(verb)?
Sentence Types
The different sentence types are statements and
questions.
Asking a question in ASL requires you to identify what
type of question you are asking by putting a line with
whq or q above the sentence.
When asking a whq question you can have more than
just a yes or no answer.
For this type of question your eyebrows should be
closer together and pointed downward like your are
making a mad face
When asking a q question you are asking a yes or no
question.
When asking this type of question, your eyebrows
should be raised up a bit like you are worried.
