INDIAN POLITY

INTRODUCTION
The britishers came to India in 1600
They were traders till 1765 bt started diwani i.e rights over revenue and
civil justice of Bengal bihar and Orissa.
So sepoy mutiny started in 1858.
And this was continued till the grant of independence on 15th august 1947
Independence was granted bt the constitution was not still formed so it
was formed on the suggestion given by MN Roy ( a pioneer of communist
movement and radical democracy) in 1934 and constituent assembly was
formed in 1946 .
Then constitution came into force on 26th jan 1950
THE COMPANY RULE(1773-1858)
REGULATING ACT OF 1773
This is of great constitutional importance as
a) First step taken by britishers to control and regulate the affairs of
east india company
b) It recognised the political and administrative functions of the
company
c) It laid the foundations of the central admin in india
FEATURES OF THE ACT
It designated governor of Bengal as the Governor general of Bengal and
created and executive committee of four members to assist him
The first governor general was lord warren hastings
The governors of Bombay and Madras were subordinates of governor
general of Bengal
It established a supreme court at Calcutta in 1774 and it comprised of 1
cheif justice and other 3 judges
ACT OF SETTLEMENT:

In order to rectify the defects of regulating act 1773 british developed this
act i 1781.
PITTS INDIA ACT OF 1784:
It is the next important act
FEATURES:
It distinguished between commercial and political functions of the
company
It allowed for the court of directors to control the commercial activities
and formed board of control to control the political activites thus it gave
rise to dual governance
And even the board of control has to supervise and direct all the
operations of civil and military govt or revenues of british
This was significant due to two reasons:
The territories of india were called the possessions of the british and
british was given supreme control over affairs of India and companys
administration.
