Shakespearesplaysaresofamousandsolovedthattheyareevenstillbeingactedoutand
madeintoallkindsofbooksandmovieshundredsofyearsaftertheywereconceived.

Shakespearesplayswereperformedandactedoutformanypeopleinmanyplaces.One
ofthemostfamousstagesthoughwastheGlobe.TheGlobefirstopenedin1599andwas
locatedjustoutsideofLondon.OneuniquethingabouttheGlobeisthatithadnosolidceiling.
Thiswassonaturallightcouldflowinandilluminatethestageduringmiddayplaysand
performances.Theroofwasnotcompletelyopenthough,thetopofthestagewascoveredina
clothcanopythatwasreferredtoasheaven.Therewasalsoatrapdoorinthefloorreferredtoas
hell.Thetrapdoorwasusedmostlyforstagebusiness.Forexample,inthefamousplay
Hamlet,
theghostcouldhaveenteredandexitedthroughthatdoor.Anotherpopulartheatrethattheplays
wereactedoutatwastheBlackfriarsTheatre
.The
BlackfriarsTheatrehowever,wasanindoor
theatreunliketheGlobe.Therefore,playsthattookplaceduringthewinterwereactedoutatthe
BlackfriarsTheatreandinthesummerthemenactedattheGlobe.
WhenShakespearewasstillaliveandhisplayswerefirstbeingperformed,allofthe
actorsweremenandboys.Eventhefemalepartswereactedoutbymen.Thesemenwere
usuallyapartof
LordChamberlain'sMenand/ortheKing'sMen.Onstagetheactorsoftenhad
tobeverytalentedandablepeople.Forexampletheysangsongs,playedinstruments,did
elaboratedancesthatwerepopularatthetime,andevenperformedlivefencing.Forcostumes
insteadofbeinghistoricallyaccurate,theyworefancyandelaborateoutfits.Occasionally,
dependingontheplaytheywouldhaveoutfitsfitforthesettingbutitwasusuallyjustfancy
dressesandgowns.Actorsoftenworesecondhandoutfitsthatwerepreviouslywornbyactual
nobles.TherewasbarelyanysceneryusedforShakespearesplays.Theonlythingstheyhad
werethingsthatwentalongwiththestorylineoftheplay.Thisincludedthingslikebeds,graves,
andthrones.
