Positive, Proactive Programming

Drug and Alcohol Education and Awareness


In response to administrations request, the Counseling Department worked to strengthen existing
substance abuse initiatives by developing and implementing a schoolwide Alcohol and Drug awareness and
education program. Selected highlights of the program include:

Developed assessment survey to measure attitudes; drive programming


Began support group for students who have family members/friends with addiction issues
Met with outside resource personnel and assisted in designing targeted presentations
Researched and applied for funding to bring in drunk/distracted driving program next year

Testing/Study Skills
In addition to organizing and supervising test prep and national testing, counselors helped establish a peer
tutoring program and met with all freshman on study skills development. Specific initiatives include:

Provided ACT test prep program which included three practice tests and six 2 hour classroom
sessions
o Conducted follow up survey for feedback on course
Planned, organized and administered the ASPIRE and PSAT tests to freshman, sophomore and junior
classes
o Met with freshman/sophomore English classes to explain testing
Administered the HSPT and make-up test to prospective students
Met with Torch Prep and Cambridge reps to gather information for next years in-house test prep
program
Initiated and implemented Math Lab in conjunction with SHA Math Department
Created and taught freshman Study Skills lesson
o Conducted follow up survey for feedback on lesson
Recruited tutors and organized program
o Tutors made available on 25 different occasions (after school and during TEAM)

Addressing the various social and emotional needs of students is a major part of the counseling
departments programming. In addition to individual, small group and large group meetings, the
counseling office was involved in a number of initiatives and activities which include:
Building healthy relationships and training leaders

Developed an anonymous survey targeted toward freshmen and sophomores to assess


views on social media
45 percent spend one to two hours daily on social media
40 percent spend more than two hours
82 percent said SHA has a responsibility to address and respond to cyberbullying

o Coordinated sophomore assembly on relational aggression with national speaker

o Developed post assessment survey
98 percent indicated they would or might use tips provided in the session
Peer and Ophelia
o Visited six area schools, mentoring 200+ 6th, 7th and 8th grade students
o Trained new leaders and mentors
o Assembled student leadership team to begin reviewing and updating Ophelia
program
Fight for Confidence Walk
o Coordinated first annual Walk in cooperation with Assumption High School
o Walk was featured on three local news programs
o Money raised nearly $700 was donated to NEDA
