The story of William Arthur Mackenzie.

William Arthur Mackenzie was a Lieutenant (acting captain) in the 1st

Western Ontario Battalion of the Canadian infantry. He was the son of J.W.
Mackenzie who was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada and husband
of Christina Mackenzie. He died at an age of 28 on 6 November 1917 in
the Second Battle of Passchendaele in the third stage. His cause of death
is unknown. He is now buried in Tyne Cot cemetery, Belgium. His grave
reference is XXXV J. 22. The 1st battalion was made on 2 September 1914.
Later on it became part of the 1st Canadian division, 1st Canadian Infantry
Brigade where it participated in the second battle of Passchendaele along
the Western front. In the second battle of Passchendaele the British Fifth
army made small operations from 20-22 October to keep pressure on the
Germans and to support the French assault on La Malmaison. Meanwhile
the Canadian Corps prepared for a sequence of assaults. The Canadians
took over the II Anzac Corps on 18 October. The Canadian Operation
planned 3 assaults. They were on 26 October, 30 October and 6
November. On 26 October the 3rd division achieved its goal at Wolf Copse
then returned to its northern flank to join with the fifth army. The 4th
division also achieved its goal but it was forced to slowly retreat from
Decline Copse because of German counter-attacks. On 30 October the 3rd
division captured Vapour Farm. On 6 November the 1st and 2nd division
reached their final goals and Passchendaele was captured. The Canadian
Corps launched a final assault on 10 November to get control of the
leftover high ground north of the village near Hill 52. This assault ended
the Second Battle of Passchendaele.
