One (1 hour) Class Period
This lesson gives the students the ability to master
reading analog clocks, which are used on a daily basis.
Knowing to properly read a clock will help the student
keep better track of time. Time management is the key
to efficient working. This lesson on time will also help
students be better organized, which is a skill used to
have more balance and productivity in your life.
Michigan Common Core State Standards for
Mathematics: Grade 2
-2. MD.7: Tell and write time from analog and
digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using
a.m. and p.m.
-Students will have the ability to read both an analog
and digital clock to the nearest 5-minute interval.
-Students will develop a better understanding of the
concept of time.
-Students will learn meanings of expressions such as
half past, quarter past, and quarter of (to, till).

concept of time. Using their knowledge of time
(Days, hours, minutes, seconds, etc.), introduce the
analog clock on the interactive white board. Teacher

Assessment

2. Teacher will then bring the paper plate clock

example out after passing out the materials needed
to make it, he/she will then instruct the students on
how to put their clock together. Using the
construction paper and scissors, students will cut out
both an hour (short) and minute (long) hand.
Students will label their plates 1-12, and mark where
the expressions half past, quarter past, quarter of
(to, till) are, as shown in the example. Using a bard,
they will stick their minute/hour hands in the middle.
3. Teacher will give a few examples using his/her own
clock. Teacher can pull up digital clock times on the
white board and have the students recreate the
times on their individual paper plate clocks. The
teacher should do this until he/she feels the students
are proficient in the subject.
4. Teacher may now hand out the worksheets to
assess the matching of analog and digital clocks
showing the same time.
Students will be assessed based on:
-Their ability to present given times on their
clocks.
-Their ability to match the digital time to the
analog clock (and vice versa) on the worksheet.
