    The Kinkaku-ji temple in Kyoto, Japan was originally built in 1400 by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu as his retirement home. It was later converted into a Zen Buddhist temple by Muso Kokushi according to the Shogun's will. During the Onin Civil War of 1467-1477, most of the temple buildings burned down except for the Golden Pavilion.
